The simple steps to create a water level seem pretty simple, but it doesn’t come cheap, so you definitely don’t want to. Do your research. I hadn’t done enough research beforehand. I usually like to tackle a project head on and then learn from my mistakes. In retrospect, here are some lessons I should have read earlier:
I started this coffee table with a piece of cherry wood that I bought from Wood Source in Ottawa. It is about four feet long and 18 inches wide. Tony cut it in half for me on the table saw, then I sanded it down and peeled it off the live edge.
Then I created the text. I used 3/4″ melamine strips for the sides of the paper and 1/4″ melamine strips for the bottom.

I think the 1/4″ melamine underneath is smooth and the coffee table will separate as the resin hardens. Don’t do that!
1/4″ mdf doesn’t come out in one piece. No, it’s like a thousand pieces. And that’s only after a few hours of cutting it and using a belt sander to smooth it out. Save time. and use thick melamine for paper!
After preparing the cherry wood and preparing the paper, it’s time to pour the resin. First I mixed a small amount of two part epoxy and coated the bottom of the paper. That way you won’t get bubbles under the coffee table. Then I carefully put two boards on the paper and put them to the paper.

Then it’s time to mix the resin for the tea. I mixed about a quarter of the resin and added blue clear and a small amount of green. The plan is to make the river light aqua blue to resemble a tropical ocean. I just thought the added color would be the perfect color. It looks like I mixed it up, but the resin changes color as it dries. It looks more like a rock dump in a river than a beach in Jamaica and I don’t like it.
My goal is to make the cake, make the perfect frosting and be done with it. It didn’t happen. As I said, I spent time sanding the melamine on the bottom and then more time sanding the top to get it flat. This is what the surface looks like after sanding…
Now back to the color issue, because the story of this coffee table actually turned out to be good

To correct the color, I mixed a small amount of epoxy and added a more transparent blue and a small amount of opaque black. I pour it on the bottom of the tea table, in front of the tea.
After drying, I sanded the resin to a matte finish. From the top of the table, the color deepened to a beautiful teal blue.
The final step for this resin coffee table is to flood coat. I mixed the resin, poured it and spread it over the top and sides using flat cardboard.

You can then remove any bubbles using a blowtorch or straw. Once you’re happy with the top and sure there are no drips on the sides or bottom, leave it alone! Allow to dry undisturbed for 24 hours.
My last mistake was that I (or Tony, not sure who was to blame) should have touched the resin before it had cured and my left fingers. I was thinking of sanding it all down and giving it a matte finish, but the gloss epoxy looks great. So I sanded the top of the lamp with 400 grit paper to remove fingerprints and poured another coat of epoxy. The end result is perfect with no fingerprints and is smooth and shiny.
Wouldn’t it knock your socks off if you spent all your time working at a desk only to have a screwdriver fall out when you install the legs? No, it’s not funny, Tony. It doesn’t happen to me. The actual modernized legs are the sleekest of this coffee table.
Black Walnut And Multi Grey With Pearl Epoxy River Coffee Table
I bought metal legs from Lowe’s and painted them matte black. To install them, I pre-drilled the holes and used 5/8″ screws to attach the legs to the top.
Overall, I am very happy with the look of the coffee table. I made some mistakes, but I corrected them and still ended up with beautiful furniture. Have you ever made a coffee table? Do you build a little smoother than my experience?

When water bases are repaired many times, one thing I notice is that many of these jobs are done with high-end equipment. Here’s the thing… you don’t have to be big business to be cool, take a training course. I actually originally wanted to make this project using our power tools (saw, drill, and sand marker), but I made a mistake with the casting and used a power tool as well. However, if you can prevent the resin from leaking under the tiles, you can completely eliminate our energy use for this project!
I also added black to make the water flow black. You can choose the color you want!

14. I then made sure my tiles were level and then poured deep water epoxy into the exposed water and cracks that needed to be filled. Be sure to follow the instructions on the container about how deep you can pour at one time. I have little desire and the resin falls off during the treatment, be careful!
15. After casting the resin, I used the Bernzomatic B4500 Heat Shrink Torch over a wide area to remove as many bubbles as possible. This is important because I don’t want the resin to harden with bubbles.
I then focused on the cake and sometimes had to use a Bernzomatic ST2200 hobby and home parts light to blow bubbles as it dried.
