How To Make Cheap Bar Stools – It’s been a while since I’ve done a clean 2×4 project. The last thing I did was my vanity and it was my favorite project I’ve ever done. I think the idea of turning a 2×4 building grade into beautiful furniture worthy of a home is very useful. I think it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
The project I decided to do was 24 inch bar stools. The reason I chose a slightly lower than normal height for the bar stools is because our new house has a 36″ bar on the back of the kitchen table. I had already designed a bar stool, but it was too tall to use in this room. Therefore, a shorter bar stool is needed.
How To Make Cheap Bar Stools
You’ll need about three 8’2×4’s for each bar stool. I say roughly because if you add regular random nodes in Pine 2×4 you get less money. I decided to cut them down so I had a lot of scrap. Although there was a lot of waste, only $21.51 was paid for the materials needed to make it. Try these solid wood bars in a store this size! I’m sure they won’t come close to that price.

Once all the approximate measurements were marked away from the knots I was able to cut them out. I have an older model Cobalt saw and I know exactly why this saw is no longer sold. It has the great flexibility of a sliding mechanism and rarely holds its angle. So I only use this saw for rough cuts.
The cut blanks can then be cut to width. Cut the first quarter of an inch off the width to remove the rounded edges.
Then a million strips had to be torn for the seats. They were 1 inch wide and 1-1/2 inches long. I cut them so the grain was 1-1/2 inches vertical.

Once they are all turned right side up, they can be glued. I used a couple of scraps at the ends to prevent the glued panel from bending under the influence of the clamp.
Cut 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″ blanks for the legs. Here’s how digging through the bins at your local home center can sometimes pay off when it comes to wood selection. I looked at 30-40 boards on my last logging trip and only bought 10 of them. This board was the best of the lot.
After the leg holes were cut and roughly cut to the correct length, I ran them through the planer to make sure both short sizes were the same. This makes cutting the half circle much easier.

If I can, I cut the entire length of the table saw by extending the slide. It’s much more accurate than what I’ve seen.
A semicircle is required at the ends of all parts of the frame. The legs are only needed from one end, but everything must be cut from both ends. This is easy to do when the finger is set in place and lifted up half the thickness of the material.
Leg parts can be two and a half laps in the center of the material on adjacent sides. I made a miter maker style stop block to get the proper clearance for the dado stack I was using. The video explains it much better than the text of this article.

Two long slats cut in all semicircles can be glued to the two legs, which form the leg joint. In order for the seat to have a nice flat and perfectly glued surface, I need to cut out the top of the legs, for this I joined two of them together and then attached them to the four legs. This gives a nice flat surface that matches the wall.
Once the upper legs are ready to be installed, I can proceed with gluing, starting with the short rails.
Then sitting. I made sure to use scraps of reclaimed wood so I wouldn’t damage the top of the seat with the clamps.

After the glue dried, I cut the top to the final length with a saw. I also used the fence to rip the top to final width.
Most joints are flush with cheap table top. Sanding takes much less time.
I used a bevel on the end of the router to break the hard edges. I also made the mistake of cutting part of the first rod in the normal routing direction, which resulted in a few pieces sticking out. Cutting out the rest solved the problem. As a result, only one of the chairs is perfect along the directed edges.

I usually use Early American Minwax Stain and get great results. I decided to change it up a bit and used Rustoleum Carrington stain which turned out as dark as I wanted. I applied a few coats of Target Coatings EM6000 Water Based Satin Lacquer. It’s a little pricey, but I really like the results I get from it.
In the end, I’m not 100% happy with the color of the stain, but that’s no one’s fault but mine. I should have gone with a more familiar tin as it would have shown the grain better. But it’s not a deal breaker. I am happy with the end result and it will definitely find use in my home.

Drill pocket holes in all tables except the foot and seat tables. Use the Kreg jig and set it 1 1/2 inches into the locking collar of the jig and bit.
Use 2 1/2-inch Kreg screws to attach the front and back of the chair. I also recommend using wood glue.

Then attach the four side boards. It connects the front stairs and the back stairs. If necessary, fasten the boards together with a clamp. I have a collection of JackClamps that I use for many projects.
Use a 2 1/2-inch krag screw to connect the two 15-inch seatposts. When finished, attach the seat boards to the posts at the bottom using 2 1/2
