Place the lamp in the box and carefully place the glass on top. Turn on the light and you’re done!
A word of caution – Use a bulb as low as possible. The bulbs give off a lot of heat and you will find that the glass heats up quickly.

When painting with watercolors, it’s easier to sketch on newsprint and transfer the final design to paper. This way you can make as many corrections and erasures as you like on the journal paper without the risk of damaging your watercolor paper.
Sometimes I transfer my drawing with carbon paper or by rubbing charcoal and graphite on the back of newsprint, these methods work, but you will end up with a very dark line and will most likely have some smudges on the paper. I prefer the lightbox method.
Easy Trace Light Box
We were looking for a way to make a lightbox quickly and easily at an affordable price and after surfing the internet and throwing different ideas together I came up with this design, the price of the lightbox is about 100 dollars, it’s quite a lot . and took. I have 5 minutes to put together:
All you need to do is cut some holes in the side of the storage box so you can connect the fluorescent tubes together as shown in the picture. Because fluorescent tubes don’t get very hot and can stick to plastic.

1 clear plastic box/bucket: about $5-$12 (I used a spare album storage container that I bought at either Michael’s or Jo-Ann’s. It’s nice because it’s flat, thin and relatively large since it was made to hold 12×12 scrapbook paper. They cost around $8-$12, but are often on sale, and both stores always have coupons.)
4 touch lights: ~$4 (I bought 2 for $1 each at the dollar store that didn’t include batteries and a 2-pack at Walmart for $3.96 that included 8 batteries. Turns out they were the exact same product, so that I paid a dollar more at Walmart to account for the cost of the battery.)
4 AA batteries per lights = 16 batteries total: $2+ (you can also buy them at the dollar store. I bought an 8 pack of low power batteries for $1. It’s not like you’re driving here. . )
Best Light Box For Tracing
Open the battery compartment and insert 4 AA batteries into each lamp. Check out the pictures inside the camera if you need help with this step. Replace the caps when finished.
Open the clear plastic box and place all 4 candles in the box. Press each light to light up.
(Note: on my box there is a small dent in the top of the box that should be avoided while drawing. However, the bottom of the box is nice and smooth so just flip the box over before putting the lights on , would fix this. situation. If you want a more permanent light box, small squares of velcro adhesive can be placed on each lamp and on the bottom of the box. I probably won’t use it very often, so I wanted to be able to remove light and use them elsewhere if necessary.)
How To: Building A Light Table Under $80
Close the lid of the box and voila! Your DIY Inexpensive Light Box. Now you can draw to your heart’s content… but don’t forget to turn off the lights when you’re done. Before the sale, I bought a light box for my art studio. It was practical and worked hard to perfect my art, but it was also expensive, bulky and difficult to use because of the electrical cord.
I sold my lightbox at an estate sale when I moved to Seattle, but as I do more handwriting and bullet journaling, I find that I need a lightbox again. This time, a large professional model was not an option due to my lack of space in my small studio – so I made it myself!
