How To Build A Grill Cart – After a long winter (isn’t it always long in Iowa?) we are finally in grilling season! It’s time to grill up burgers and meatballs and enjoy them with friends and family. If it doesn’t rain (we won’t win!).

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I would be attending a DIY workshop at The Home Depot in Des Moines. Meanwhile, Nate and I were busy building our own special version of the BBQ cart. In true Nate and Michelle style, we made it more complicated than it needed to be. Forward team!

How To Build An Outdoor Grill Cart

Today we’re sharing our custom plans for the grill basket version. The great thing about DIY workshops is that you learn the basics. You can take the information and use it to create a design that works for you and your lifestyle! As always, it seems like a lot of steps, but this project took about 3-4 hours, so it’s a great weekend project!

Drill 3 pocket holes in two of the three 30″ 2×8 end pieces using the Craig Rod. Using wood glue between the boards, attach the 2 1/2″ hole screws. Press until the wood glue has set on all 3 shelves. Sand the racks flat and smooth using a belt and/or hand sander.

Create the side boxes between the 22″ 1x4s by inserting 6″ 1x4s, using wood glue and nailing 1 1/4″ nails and tightening until the glue sets. Insert the 20.5″ 1x3s into the boxes so they are facing out. boxes (there will be a gap in the middle). Using wood glue and 1 1/4 inch nails, attach.

On the middle shelf, mark 1.25 inches on all four corners. Drill a hole with a 1″ drill bit (this hole fits 3/4″ pipe, so make sure the pipe you buy fits a 1″ drill bit).

At this point we have painted all surfaces with an exterior stain/sealer. We didn’t think we would ever put food directly on the surface, so we chose a product that covers the wood since it will be stored outside. If you are cooking directly on the surface, use a food safe product such as a sealant.

Sometimes the black iron can be greasy, so clean all parts. Install the legs by attaching the 12-inch pipe to the flange on one end and the 3/4-inch fitting on the other end. Then add another 12-inch pipe to the other end of the joint. Make a towel rack by attaching 1-inch pipe to the flanges, then add a 90-degree bend to the 1-inch pipe. Attach an 18-inch pipe to each elbow.

Spray all the pieces and let them dry according to the instructions (it’s important to let it cure completely because you’ll be pushing the tubes on the middle shelf and can scratch the paint.)

Slide the middle shelf onto the pipes through the drilled holes. I covered all the gaps between the pipe and the shelf with some kind of external silicone sealant.

Attach the side panels to the top shelf using wood glue and 1 1/4-inch screws. Use exterior wood filler to fill the holes after the filler dries.

Now it’s time to use this grill cart. I hope Dad enjoys one of these for Father’s Day!

We put spice racks on the sides. This gives enough space to work and store everything you need for baking. Nate also added a beer opener for us because I guess you can’t have a BBQ without a grown up drink. Or cola from a bottle.

We’re big fans of the industrial look, so we went with metal pipes for the towel rail and side supports.

So when it comes to designing a grill cart, I’ve tried to include everything I need to make grilling easy. And I think he made some great suggestions!

Drawers are his favorite part of any storage space, and for good reason. It is much easier for them to organize things inside. And with fully extendable drawer runners, you can see everything!

So of course he asked for a drawer on the grill table. It’s a great place to store not-so-pretty but necessary grill accessories like scrubbers and lighters.

But you can also use it for cookware, smoking boards, etc. It also looks very nice with a massive face frame and a nice cedar panel.

And while the drawer front looks very cool, it is made without a router with an extremely simple drawer front. Perfect for a rustic grill cart that lives outdoors!

Since then, we always have an extra tank of fuel. When one is empty, we put a new one on the grid and immediately fill it.

So my husband insisted that the grill cart have room to store an extra fuel tank. Now it’s easy for him to check if we have enough fuel for production.

This was a pretty genius request for a grill cart and totally my husband’s idea! But he always has at least a salt and pepper grinder and a non-stick frying spray.

These things are very easy to knock off the walls of the grill. Therefore, he asked for a certain place to store them.

I turned the edge of the top shelf into a perfect spice rack. With a simple back and an aluminum front, all these items will be easily accessible and out of the way.

The latter option is a bit more for me, but while we’re still settling into our new home, I wanted the grill cart to be easy to move around. And it can be moved to the deck so we can use it for entertaining, grilling, or whatever else we need.

I added wheels to one side of the grill basket. On the other hand, the legs. You can easily take the legs and take the stroller to its new home, and the legs help keep the stroller stable without the need for expensive locking wheels.

To keep the cost of a new cart down, I used standard douglas fir 2x4s and 2x6s for the frame of the grill cart. They were sealed with an external waterproofing sealant.

The rest of the carriage was built from cheap cedar fences. I really like the look of the cedar because of the patina. And the smell is my favorite!

It was a great addition to the sealed 2×4. I’ve even used it as a drawer center front and drawer bottom for an easy project that doesn’t require a router.

Thanks for the inspiration. I just built this but modified it to fit my Camp Chef Sidekick attachments that have a propane tank. It turned out great and was a fantastic weekend project!

Bought plans for it. Changed size (a little deeper and wider). Milled and planed cedar pegs and finished with Peruvian walnut. Treated surface like a meat block surface with oil and conditioner. I would seal the rest with teak oil. A great idea and became the basis for experiments.
