I used my RYOBI reciprocating saw and it cut like butter. But you can use a saw, a circular saw or … if you’re desperate … cut the branches. It doesn’t have to be pretty.
I then primed and painted it white and hired Nick to help me hang it using little L brackets (which I also painted white). We pick it up in the desired place, mark one edge and draw a straight line with a pencil using a long level. Then using our RYOBI Impact Driver screw the brackets into the wall (both edges and top/middle beam) and into the bamboo…and it’s tough. No need to worry about falling!

I had one of those large mosquito nets (that too from my college days…filler!) and cut a hole in the middle of the back and placed it over my “papasan” canopy. I only turned the edges behind some pasan wood arrows. (You can see we left some space above the canopy…we did this to make it comfortable for the little ones. There was talk of putting a long floating shelf across the wall above it but we haven’t decided)
My sister let me take her papasan to use as a cushion on the floor of our canopy and ironically…the cushion frame arrived…which brings the problem of my papasan slatted chairs full circle.
I made some pillows out of some shirts that didn’t fit me over the years (tough!) and followed Mandi’s pocket pillow tutorial.

And I lit some flower lamps I bought at a thrift store a long time ago…I knew I would eventually find a use for them (tough!). Aren’t the colors perfect?
I was going to stop there, but it looks like Papason needs something in the frame. I didn’t like the frame showing through the tulle, it felt like something was missing. I was thinking of making a bunch of big flowers out of coffee filters or something crazy like that, but then I thought of this. Are you wondering what I’m thinking?
I used some RIT paint and painted this thing pink and placed it over the “dome” of the Pope’s canopy. I think it looks like flower petals. And I feel less bitter about all the time I wasted doing exciting fun.

Let me tell you, it sounds more “bloated” and far-fetched than I would normally say. But it comes from things we already have… and I accepted that. And I love how it turned out. I mean, it’s for budding girls. I hope they like it.

So of course my frugality told me I wasn't making one before I paid that price!
I looked for tutorials and didn’t really find any papasan cushions, but I found absolutely zero for a double papasan! I did mine on the fly and it wasn’t perfect, but I’ll figure it out next time I make it!
Turn Your Old Papasan Into A Canopy Reading Nook
Step 1: Fold the towel in half and form the oval shape of the chair. To get a good estimate of how big your oval should be, measure the seat of the chair loosely with a tape measure.
Step 2: After drawing my oval (I used chalk), I tried a few different ideas for placing the pillows, but ended up with 3 columns of 3 pillows.
Step 4: Sew the two pieces together like a pillow case. Be sure to leave an opening big enough to put pillows in, and you’ll probably need to put your upper body in too!

Step 5: Once I had the pillows, I simply stuffed the pillow. So basically I did some easy stitching on both sides of the fabric to hold the cushions in place and give the cushion a bit more ‘oomph’.
The hill made it a dog bed. We’ve had it for about 4 days and it’s already stained from its dirty paws, but hey, if my kid is comfortable for $40, I’m not complaining! I love how soft and comfortable it is. I know I’ll have to do it again when I get the fabric from outside, but again, a whole forty dollars. Yes, I’m fine now 🙂
