A sweet terrarium isn’t just for weddings, it can add a finishing touch to a coffee table, an understated greenery on the table, or even a unique housewarming gift!
1. Place a 1 inch layer of gravel/river layer on the bottom of the pot; It provides drainage to prevent plants from rotting in standing water. We used to mix stones from big and small rivers. We bought our glass containers from Michael’s store and succulents from our garden nursery.
2. (Optional) Add 1/2 inch of charcoal. Charcoal helps keep the terrarium healthy. Repeat this layer. We read that it helps to wash the charcoal first to prevent black dust from building up inside the pot.

3. Place in a layer of cactus, quick-draining soil that retains moisture. Use a shovel or your small hand to turn the cactus soil into your glass container.
4. Remove the plants from the pot. If you have a lot of spices in one container, divide them and use them separately. Dig a small hole in the ground and put the roots in the soil. Gradually add soil around the edges of the pot and under the plant and around the roots. Sometimes, thin and tall plants are difficult to stand and tend to fall over. Pack plenty of soil around and place large rocks around the base to keep it stable. We used about 3-5 succulents per center.
3. The bottom of the water should drain easily. After watering, no more than an inch of water should be visible on the bottom rock.

Cut the chicken wire into 12 cm by 12 cm and flat pieces. (Caution: Chicken wire can be tricky to work with, be sure to protect your hands with work gloves.) Fold the cut edge over. Make a pile of chicken wire and fold the ends together. Fill the planter with floral foam or other stiff material to support the pipe.
Fill a bowl with water and soak the sphagnum moss for 15 minutes. Little by little, squeeze out excess water and wrap it inside the wire. Continue to fill the cone with wet moss until full. Place the chicken wire shape upside down inside the pot and secure with floral pins.
Arrange the spices by gently removing them from their containers and shaking the mixture vigorously.

Use floral pins to attach the plant to the plant shape. Add lines from the bottom and create vertical “stripes” of a specific color.
Alternate plants in different colors as you work around the topiary. Go back and view the project remotely to see your work.
