For a long time I wanted to make a piece of furniture for the interior ‘garden’. Plants not only help improve indoor air quality (see NASA study), they also improve mood. So I finally gave in and made a terrarium coffee table! It’s a lot of work for my beginner, but the math and effort are worth it.

Before I started, I set a few parameters for myself: 1. I had to use at least one upcycled/upcycled item and 2. The finished product had to be fun and cheeky. Plants alone have a lot of character (and I planned to add little figures to add more character), so I wanted the table to be very simple/minimal in design.

*Note: Many paints used in older homes contain lead, no matter how fresh the piece is, it’s not worth the health risk. If you think you’ve found a piece that was painted after 1978 (the year lead paint was banned), buy a paint test kit online or at your local hardware store and ask if it can be tested first. .

I wanted clean edges for the door, so I used a table saw to ‘hole’ it a bit. This was just an unnecessary aesthetic choice.

To get to the raw wood, gently press the door against the workbench and run a wide strip of painter’s tape along the edge of the glass.

* I used the Black & Decker SmartSelect 4-in-1 multi-sander. Its feet are interchangeable and the finger attachment allows me to quickly remove the top end of the door. All it needed was some hand sanding on the inside corners. Boom!

Flip the door around and lay down some sort of soft surface (felt, cloth, or rubber matting) to protect the raw new wood on the front. Then glue it to the back edge of the glass.

I wanted to smooth out the edges a bit, so I gently put a (smart) chisel into the door and sanded the edges with 180 grit sandpaper.

To get to the areas left over from removing the door hardware, I wrapped some paper around the end of a small dowel.

When I cut the edges of my door, I tried to end up with a full inch measurement to keep things simple. I managed to make my door 39″ x 18 1/2″. Yes!

Once you have the final measurements of your door, you can calculate how much space is left for your table and how much material you will need.

Now that the door is cut from raw wood, it will be easier for you to tell what kind of wood it is made of, so you know what kind of wood to buy to make the rest of your table.

If you’re unfamiliar with the different types of wood, drop by the door of your local lumber store and they’ll help you figure it out. Mine turned out to be cherry so that’s what I bought.

I cut my own wood from a large board, but it took too long, so I suggest cutting it ahead of time. To match the size of the wood for the door, I opted to use 1″ x 2″, which is actually 3/4″ x 1 1/2″.

Now that you have your materials and measurements, it’s time to make the top shape. Let’s start by doing the positions.

The position in the upper frame is adjusted to the upper edge of the glass. I recommend using 3/16″ glass, so you’ll need to cut 5/16″ wide slots to give yourself some room to fit.

Move the fence less than 1/8″ to the right and run all four sections back in the same direction as the previous pass.

Continue with small right knots until your stitches are 5/16″ wide.

Cut a test piece to make sure your saw is set correctly at 45 degrees. Check it with a square tool. (like in the image)

I then cut two long pieces (mine were 39″) and two short pieces (mine were 18 1/2″) with two 45 degree cuts each.

It’s best to put the clips in the corners, but if you don’t have any corner clips, use masking tape to secure them.

Holding the two 8 1/2″ pieces together, mark the bottom front surface with your pencil and write a ‘groove’ on the two inside faces as shown in the photo above.

Using a ruler or square, draw a line 1 1/2″ up from the edge of the marked side.

Then measure a line 3/8″ (half) from the side edge to match the front line.

Fill in the area on the side closest to the front mark with scribbles to identify the part to be cut.

Do this for just the ten 8 1/2″ vertical strips on one end, then on both ends of the bottom four pattern pieces.

* Make sure the edges of the bottom four panels are on the same face/side of each panel.

Then measure the distance from the top edge of the surface bit to the outer edge of the rotary router bit.

This information will be used to set up a template (next step) to clean up the posts.

Add the distance from the edge of the router to the edge of the circle you measured in the last step (1 5/8″ in my case) to how far your edge will be (1 1/2″ in mine). This turned out to be around 3 1/8″ for my project.

Measure this distance from the top edge of the bottom board and draw a line.

Place a piece of wood on the edge of your two pieces, then place the piece of wood at a 90 degree angle to line up with the line you drew.
