How To Make Farmhouse Chairs – Earlier this year I built a DIY farmhouse dining table and farmhouse side chair. I also want to build two farm chairs to go with this table. So I took tons of pictures on Pinterest trying to find the chair I wanted. I found a few patterns, but I wanted the back of the chair to be taller than the chair I found on Pinterest. Here are the steps to make this DIY farmhouse bench.
I designed and built these DIY farmhouse kitchen chairs with high backs to match our dining room table set. This DIY chair is very strong and can withstand a lot of weight. Also, with a soft cushion, it’s very comfortable compared to just a wooden handmade chair top.

Mixing Dining Tables & Chairs

First, use a miter saw to cut two 2×6s to 48″ long. These 48″ long 2x6s will be used for the back legs and back supports. If you prefer a shorter back for your farm chair, you can make it shorter. Draw the leg/post outline in 2 × 6 size as shown in the picture. Use the jigsaw to do most of the cutting and then use the jig saw to cut the center back of this leg. You can’t cut the center of the back with a cutter, so the best tool for this is a jig saw.
Next, we will make a cross rail that will connect the two from the back post. With a miter saw, cut the two rails at 45 degrees to 17 5/8″ on each end. Since I didn’t want to buy an extra 1×3 board just for these two rails, I used one 1×4 board instead. Then, with my table saw, I cut 17 I cut a 5 1/8″ long slot in 1×3 (actual width 2 ½”). See the slot list for more cross rail sizes. Then find the center of the rail. And cut. 2 ½” wide 3/8″ slot deep (3/8″ is half the thickness of the plate). I used the saw skill to cut slots in the rail. Lower the blade so that it protrudes 3/8 inch. Then, in the place marked on the plot, cut several times until you have cut the entire tree and made a groove. You can use a wood carving chisel to remove the remaining wood from the slot.

Now take the 1×4 and 1×3 boards and cut them both 16″ long. Then, using the Kreg Jig, drill a pocket hole on both sides of the 1×4 and 1×3 boards (see photo). Fasten these rails together, being sure to use Wood glue at the seam/joint. The pieces made in the previous step slide together to form an X-shaped cross. Use clamps to hold the cross rails in place, then use a nail gun (with 2″ nails) to place the cross and install it on the bottom rails.
Take a 2×3 board and cut two pieces 17 ½” long. This board will be the front legs. Then take a 1×3 board and cut two aprons 17 ½” long. This board will connect the front leg to the back leg below the seat. Like the cross rail in step 2, I didn’t want to buy extra boards for the stretchers, so I made a 1 ¼” wide board using a 1×4 board to split it in half. Using this 1 ¼” wide board, I made two 19″ long sheets in one I cut the side at a 10 degree angle. This board will also connect the front and back legs, but this time it’s called the bottom stretcher. Drill pocket holes for the apron and stretcher board as shown. These pieces are glued wood and the 1 1/4″ pocket connects the holes with screws.
As in step 4, cut the apron and stretcher for the front and back of the seat. All of these pieces are 16 inches long. Drill a pocket hole as shown and attach both sides of the seat with wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. Then attach the cross rail to the back post. The pocket hole at the top of the cross can be covered with a 3/8″ dowel to hide the screws. See the dining table or children’s chair for examples of covering the pocket hole with 3/8″. dowel. At this point I privatized and then painted the entire frame of the farm chair white.

Take the ¾” plywood and cut a piece 19″x20″. Then cut the batten 1″ over the crease on all four sides (21×22). Wrap the pillow with fabric and base fabric under the layer. Once the time is up, secure the bench to the seat with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.

We recently gave up our old outdoor chairs because of our mischievous dog Matilda who thinks she is human and loves to sit on them. I’ll explain, it’s a Labrador cross, so it’s not a small dog. As soon as he climbed into the chair, all the covers were torn off and became impenetrable. So here is my next project on how to make a farmhouse garden bench out of an old bench.
Step 1 – Remove the seat cushions. Cut 9 (18 if making 2 chairs) 300mm pieces measuring 19mm x 19mm. Attach 3 pieces to the inside and front of each tri-level chair to the top of the base.

Now for the fun step 3 – mix equal parts MMS Farmhouse White, water and binder. Let’s sit down. Using a circular saw, cut the desired edge on each bench.
Step 4 – Next, mix your paint with easel paint. For this project I painted 3 layers, letting go in the middle. After the trouble has dried to your liking.
Step 5 – Print the fresh cut flowers on your computer using your favorite font. Place it on your chair and tape it down using magic tape. Transfer to the surface using transfer paper.

Step 8 – Take your soft cloth and apply Miss Mustard Seed – Antiquing Wax to the seat only.
And here’s a fun way to add a little farmhouse charm to your outdoor entertaining area. Or if you don’t have 6 benches to work with, 3 would definitely make an attractive park bench on the front porch. I hope the table is set for this challenge as well, but that will have to be for another day!
