It is not uncommon to see the white wire used as the HOT wire or the LINE wire in a switch. However, the white wire needs to be marked with a color other than white, gray, or green. I have different colored strips of electrical tape that I use to re-tag. Some electricians use a permanent marker to change the color of the wire.
