The first thing I did was remove the rods from the barrel, being careful not to damage the rings or the barrel head. The head of the barrel was also made of sections of oak, which were joined with dowels. Since the barrel was empty and allowed to dry, it came off easily. Dowels were driven into the holes and the towers were cut. I sorted the spears by size and stacked them.

This chemical is acidic! Follow the instructions on the container. Wear strong rubber gloves; protection for both eyes and face. I let the hoops sit and after an hour (or however long it took to polish the bars) I removed the ice with water and a steel brush. I dried the circles thoroughly with an old cloth.

I used a brush with coarse plastic bristles to work wood bleach into each column. The main ingredient in wood bleach is oxalic acid; commonly used to remove stains and erosion from exterior wood siding. Attention! This chemical is also an acid! Follow the instructions on the container. To avoid burns, wear heavy duty rubber gloves, long sleeves, eye protection and face protection! I left the bleach on for about 30 minutes, then rinsed the surface with water and let it dry. The bleach removed most of the weathered gray, but barely touched the black spots left by the steel rings. You can skip this step depending on how you want the finished surface to look. You can simply sand everything down to bare wood. Or, if you want to keep the patina, lightly sand the surface and apply exterior polyurethane (spar) after removing the carbon.
By sanding the bare wood and protecting the surface with a clear coat, you’ll get a rich honey-colored finish. I sanded the back with a palm sander using 120 grit sandpaper and prepared both sides for painting.
The spears were too short to cover the full length of the seat or back. I cut the cross braces from the barrel head pieces with a jigsaw. I placed the rear support about ¾ of the way from the top and the seat support the same distance from the front. I sanded, primed and painted all sides.

When I built the model, I realized that I needed to screw the posts on the seat back so that they would fit snugly against the cross bar and sit flush with the curved back. I cut a tapered cut in the side pieces of the seat back and removed 3/8 of an inch from the center post (now back as a stool). The second coat also dried very quickly. By combining the stain with the spray, you can shorten the application and drying time.
When the parts were dry, I attached the seat and back with #10 x 1-1/2″ oval head screws; one at the end of each bracket. I used quick clips to hold the braces in place. For the back strip, I put the screws from the top of the strip into the steel frame. The seat bracket was attached to the steel frame from the front with screws. I used quick clips to hold the brackets in place while drilled 7/64″ pilot holes and connected them. Drilling pilot holes prevents the screws from tearing the oak.

The strips designated for the seat stays were attached to the frame with a 1-1/2″ x #10 oval screw at the top and a 1-1/4″ x #10 screw through the back strip . Again, quick clips were used to secure the sheets while they were tied. The seat straps were attached from below to hide the 1-1/4″ x #10 screws. The outermost seat rails were attached to both the console and the metal frame with 1 -1/4″ x #10.
I cut out the circles with a hacksaw and removed the sharp edges with a metal file. Each piece was attached to the head of the pan with three 5/8″ x #12 screws; two parts for the back and one for the seat.
