But we don’t have room for a permanent picnic table in our new house. So I teamed up with Craig Tools to make a folding picnic table!

When building a folding picnic table, it is important to have a light table so that you can move it easily. That’s why I decided to make a wooden table from cedar.
Cedar wood is lighter than other woods, and has many other advantages for outdoor tables. Cedar is naturally resistant to bugs, rot and weather.

In addition to the light table and great outdoor benefits, cedar is also beautiful. I love the contrast of light and dark with the red.
And with a simple exterior sealer, it will bring out the natural beauty of the wood so you don’t need to do anything else. I haven’t set up a folding picnic table yet because it’s been raining every day for the past 2 weeks.
But when it’s a little dry, I’m going to use an exterior oil to seal the wood. It must be reapplied every spring and fall to keep the wood lubricated so that it does not patina.

The table top is made of 2×6 and 2×2 boards that form 2 small table tops, and when put together, they together make a 55 1/2″ x 30″ table top.
Table pieces go together quickly and easily with the Craig Jig. I build with the new Craig 720, but the cheap Jig 520 or 320 is a great jig for starters or small spaces (and I also use it in the shop).
The most important part of the structure is the foot. The legs are made from 2×4 boards, and one edge needs to be rounded so that it can move when folded.
How To Build A Rustic Table Top
I used a band saw and a sander to round one edge of the leg pieces. But you can also use a jigsaw and a sander for this.
The last tricky part is that the holes drilled in the legs have to be straight. If they are not at an angle of 90 degrees to the board, the screws will not sit properly on the legs.
If you have a drill you can easily drill a nice straight hole, I couldn’t. That’s why I use this training guide. This helps keep the drill bit straight while drilling. Or you can make a template like in this video. Many people keep one or two tables in reserve if they have a buffet or need more guests for dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice to dress up the table top and match your furniture?

1. Glue the table part with wooden pegs, then clamp and set for 24 hours.
5. Finish the top of the rustic table with a clear coat of polyurethane (we used Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane) and let it dry for 24 hours.

Having enough space for family and friends during the holidays is a constant problem. A folding table is a simple solution, but no one wants to take up too much space with big plastic eyes when the room is perfectly decorated. However, the farm table is pulled out of place when needed and, when it is, there is a statement in itself.
Start by placing five 6-foot boards next to each other. Using a tape measure, mark the side panels 1 inch from each edge and center. Next, mark three 16-inch boards with a marker on the board. Drill pilot holes in each 16-inch board, making sure to drill through each larger board as well. Insert screws into each pilot hole to secure the large panel.
Using a hammer, screwdriver, screws and anything else that is necessary for work, give the work surface a good shake. When finished, sand with a palm sander to remove debris and ensure a smooth surface for staining. Cover the surface thoroughly with dark wood stain, making sure the stain gets into all the small cracks and crevices.

When the stain is dry, lift the table and put the attached legs in place. Drill pilot holes through each mounting hole. Attach the legs to the wood with screws. Just like that, your custom folding farm table is ready!

If you need to sand a 1/4 inch sheet of plywood, you may want to do it with hand sandpaper. You don’t want to cause the wood surface to stick.
Next drill two pocket holes in each end of all four 1/2″x1″x15″ table sides and all eight 1/2″x1″x24-1/8″ table brackets.
The picture above is what it looks like on one side of the folding table, so be prepared to set it up twice.

After the rectangular table base is assembled, place a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood inside the rectangle on a flat surface. Detail 1/4″ pieces of plywood on the 15″ and 25-1/8″ sides of the table, then remove the plywood sheet.
The line you draw will show exactly how high you need to attach the 24-1/8″ support pieces to the desk storage. You need a 1/4 inch gap between the support pieces and the top so you can place that 1/4 inch plywood back later.

Note: Yes, I only drilled one hole for each support piece to secure the screws… but if you don’t have experience, it’s not the best idea, just use two holes. It’s very difficult to attach because you can’t use a normal craig clamp with only one hole.
