How To Make Slip Covers For Arm Chair – Learn how to cover the back of a chair with painter’s fabric. I’ve documented a video that includes the entire cover process, lots of instructions, and my tips for the perfect fit.

I’ve been sewing simple things for years; my little girls clothes, pillows, curtains, blankets and even simple blankets for the bed in the living room.

TO NOTE: I have heard from many readers that the brand of fabric you buy makes a difference. I didn’t know that, because I’ve only used this brand from Amazon. Other brands are gray and white.

UPDATE PART TWO: Thanks to Lori, a dear reader of my blog, I now know why some other brands won’t be white. The pillows I recommend from Amazon are 100% cotton so they are breathable. Some brands are made from 50% polyester, so they are opaque. I knew people had issues with other brands, but now I know exactly why!

2. If adding pipes, use the original seat as a guide. Apply to all locations where it was installed by the original seat manufacturer.

This is not a quick process. You’ll want your seat to be near the sewing machine so you can go back and forth to make sure everything is in order.

I used a zipper foot to get the needle as close to the cord as possible without sewing over it.

Then I took all the parts of the chair and built them. (This will make more sense in the video.) I made pieces for the outside and inside of the wings, two pieces for the back, two pieces for the arms, two pieces for the front of the arms, two pieces for the bottom outside , a piece for the front apron and a large compartment for the front seat backrest (if that makes sense).

I started by joining the two back pieces together and attaching them (straight together) to the back of the chair.

It is very important to keep the backrest nice and firm. This will be more visible in the finished cover.

Following the outline of the original seat, I attached the outer wings to the backrest and the inner wings, which I also attached to the front of the seat section.

You can see how many pins I have used in this process. I wanted to make sure it followed the lines of the seat, providing a comfortable fit.

Sometimes things can look a little messy, but they can really come out when you push them to another spot.

I knew I wouldn’t have enough bleached fabric to finish my project, so I used an opaque fabric for the part that would hide under the hood.

Note in the photo below how all of my seam allowances are on the original chair lines.

After I finished the main part of the cover, I added a hole punch and mark along the bottom edge to finish it off.

To make the pattern, I traced the doll shape onto the fabric, leaving about a half inch on each side to help with sewing.

For the bottom of the pot, I have two pieces that overlap so the pot fits inside.

I also made a long strip to go around the center of the flower to join the top and bottom together, with the cord cut in between.

If you’ve been on the fence about trying it, I encourage you to! As long as you go slow and check the fit often, you can totally make it.

So I decided to make simple shoes for them, which turned out to be easier than I expected.

This project was relatively easy because my chairs have the classic L shape. The L shape also works great for rectory style dining chairs. If you have a different style that you’re looking to update, you can still use these steps, but taking measurements may not be as straightforward.

Keep in mind that if your fabric has a large pattern (called a “repeat” in design parlance), you’ll want to match the lines as closely as possible, so you may need to purchase extra fabric to change the pattern. eye

I measured from the bottom of the seat back, up and around and forward. I then measured the pieces of each side of the letter “L”. So I had to figure out how to fit all those pieces onto one piece of fabric.

Then you have to choose the fabric. You can use almost anything, but I chose a sturdy fabric for the shoes because I wanted them to hold their shape and stand up to wear and tear from kids and dogs. Not to mention your wild guests.

Once you’ve chosen your fabric, choose a piece of yarn that works for you. (Use a sturdy object if using upholstery fabric.)

Then create your model. This doesn’t have to be technical or intimidating. It’s just one way to get your measurements on the fabric. Mark your measurements on the back of the fabric with a pencil or ruler.

Be sure to include any patterns or designs you would like on the stitching on the fabric. My fabric only has a subtle pattern so I went with that, but it ended up being much easier to work with. Current situation!

Remember to leave a few inches under the seat so you can trace the entire piece.

Now cut out your pieces. When you cut out the pattern, be sure to leave about an inch around each edge for stitching. (It’s the edge that closes inward and prevents the teeth from opening.)

Now place the fabric upside down on the chair. Use straight pins to secure the fabric pieces around the edges of the seat. Place the pins as close to the seat as possible for a good fit, and use lots of pins (about every two inches).

Use your sewing machine to stitch the entire row you made with your pins, removing each pin as you go. Don’t worry about the bottom edge just yet.

Now try to fit the right side trim to your seat. If some areas feel too narrow or too loose, you’ll need to rearrange them. It sounds annoying, but it’s actually not that bad.

Once your cap is well in place, you’ll want to trim the bottom portion of the entire “stick”. Simply fold the fabric inward twice and sew.
