What’s better than having a pool table? Have a pool table that turns into a ping pong table! For under $100, we’ll show you how to do just that by creating a ping pong table top.

But before I start, I have to be honest. Look, this ping pong table top is not up to ping pong standards. It’s only 4 feet wide instead of the standard 5′ but will save you about $50.

Select your plywood and ask your local home improvement store to cut it in half. Before picking it up, be sure to measure your car. 4’x4′ will be a tight (or impossible) squeeze for most. Believe me, it’s inconvenient to have to go back to the store, get lost and return everything or rent a van. Do yourself a favor and get your car measured first to avoid the home improvement embarrassment.
In one of the two pieces of plywood, we pre-drill holes for inserting wooden inserts. We’re just pre-drilling here. We’ll move on to the installation later. All you need to do here is drill a hole slightly smaller than your insert for each of the four inserts.

To figure out a position, grab one of the 5″ corners. Place it on the edge of the plywood and mark the two holes. We extended the elbow of our clamp over the edge of the plywood so that the mesh would extend further.
Stain your board and pour paint on the corners and hex screws. For the table top, I chose a simple design with a stripe down the middle. I started by painting the entire ceiling with Weathered Oak.
Once dry, I placed a piece of masking tape in the center of the frame. I took a straight 1×2 and attached it on top of the tape. I then ran a razor blade through both sides to score it along the tape. This will help keep the darker spot from bleeding. If the razor blade cut part of the tape, be sure to remove the excess before painting.

Then add color to both sides of the strip. Once the stain is dry, remove the tape and (hopefully) the clean line down the middle will appear.
Apply the polyurethane according to the instructions on the box. I chose the triple thickness polyurethane because we could get a nice thick layer in just two coats. After the first coat was completely dry, we sanded the plywood with 220 to make sure it was nice and smooth before applying the second coat.
Place a hex nut on the end of the threaded rod and screw it into the wood. You want to adjust the hex nut so that it is flush with the top of the insert wood and allow the machine screw to be halfway through the wood.

Using this setup, you can insert the wood into the pre-drilled holes. Be careful to screw the insert in a straight line.

Add masking tape to the other side of the Ping Pong table top (the side that touches the pool table). This will help prevent scratches on the pool table and ensure the ping pong top stays in place. Place masking tape near the edge where the plywood will rest on the pool table rails.

Assembling the game board is easier than you think. No tools required. Place the top of the ping pong table on the pool table. Align your brackets with the wood inserts and hand tighten the hex screws. Then place the mesh around the supports. (You can find the leather knit tutorial here)
Then, when you’re done playing, remove the net, loosen the screws and remove the brackets. We need everything in a little basket with ping pong balls and rackets to keep it safe.
The best part of this setup? It only takes a few minutes to assemble and disassemble, so you can switch between table tennis and table tennis without too much hassle. You’ll want a partner, though. It’s very difficult to build a 4′ piece of plywood yourself when your span is only 4’5″.

Place the easels in the arrangement shown. Easels in the middle should be perpendicular to the center of the table. The end easels should be perpendicular to the middle easels.
Place the panels on the easels. The hammock is a retractable hammock. Take it out and insert it into the table so that the mesh connects to the seam where the two panels meet.

If you’re worried about panels separating, don’t be. If you don’t plan on bending over or hitting the table, the panels are heavy enough to stay in place.
If you like, use some repair boards and attach them to one of the edges of the panel at the end where the mesh would be attached. Then use thumbscrews to secure it to the other panel. Be sure to drill the pilot holes first! Thumbscrew allows you to manually secure and separate panels.
If you don’t want to leave the table, or if you want to play alone, disassemble the table and place only half of the table against the wall. Just stack the two halves.
