Have you ever found a piece of junk waiting to be turned into treasure?! I got these vintage chairs for free (yes…that’s right….sigh!) on my local Facebook group!!

I know exactly what to do with these old chairs. I want to give them new life with a fresh coat of paint and turn them into a fun outdoor bench.
Although the seats are a little bumpy, that’s okay. I mean, after all… they’re headed for the dump!
All they need is a good cleaning and some paint. I’m glad we were able to give these old chairs a new life and turn them into an elegant bathroom bench.

Are you ready to see how to turn two old chairs and a pallet into a colorful outdoor patio bench?
For starters, you want to give the seats a good clean. Especially if you’re using old chairs that are on their way to the trash like mine!
After we got them as a gift from someone on Facebook, they too sat in our garage for a few months until I had time to tackle this DIY chair.

This will remove any residue and/or finish currently on the seats and give the exterior paint something to stick to.
You can use a damp cloth or a washcloth. I like the tack coats because they are a little wet and absorb all the sand perfectly.
The bike bench will now be outside in our yard, so I decided to use a quality exterior paint to extend the life of the wood exterior.

Sherwin Williams was kind enough to send me some Resilience Exterior latex paint to try out for this project. The Resilience line offers exceptional moisture resistance, which I definitely need since we live in a climate with extremely cold and hot summers.
I used a brush to apply the paint, but you can also use paint if you have it to speed up this DIY sofa bench project.
As I mentioned in the video below, when painting outdoor furniture, you really want to think about covering the entire piece of furniture, not just covering the wood in the areas you can see.

The exterior paint acts as a seal for the wood, so it’s important to get into all the corners.
Also, don’t forget to paint the sides of the seat and even the bottom of the legs where the seat touches the floor!
Note: if you think your outdoor bench might sit in puddles, you can attach some risers to the bottom of the legs so it doesn’t sit directly on the ground.

I ended up doing two coats of exterior paint. If I put it on a little thicker, I could probably get away with making one….but I tried to paint in a simple outfit even if it took a while. It’s a little better at the end.
After applying 2 coats of exterior paint and waiting for them to dry, I was happy with the color (which is Sherwin Williams Refresh, by the way). But I just don’t like how the bench turns.
My style is usually a bit quiet and rustic. I know I can’t take care of the chairs like I used to when I painted the furniture. The exterior paint coats need to be clean to provide moisture protection for this outdoor bench, so of course I can’t sand them down. I finished drying and sanding the seat with white acrylic paint.

Dry erase is a simple technique you can use to add some character to your image. Drywall is also great for adding attention to furniture. And it’s easy to do!
All you need to do is take an old mouse pad and put some paint on it and wipe off the paint mostly with a paper towel or towel.
Then carefully apply the paint to the furniture by just touching it. Always guide the paint with the grain of the wood.

You can always go back and add more white marks by dry brushing, so start small and be light on the brush.
If you end up with too much white in some areas, you can go back to the outer paint color and use the dry erase method to reduce the white.
While the paint is drying, you can start working on the wooden pallet. We always keep some pallets around our house because we use them all the time for DIY woodworking projects (we actually made our bed out of pallet wood!)

Once you have the pallet wood, you can measure the bench seat and, if necessary, cut the pieces to the correct size to fit the bench seat.
We finished the gap between the seats to match exactly the width of the pallet, so cuts are kept to a minimum.
I used a finishing gun to attach the wooden pallet frames to the bench seat. I added 2 nails to each pallet wood that met the seat part of the chair.

Be sure to leave some holes between the pieces of wood to allow water to pass through and not get on the seat.
I also used a little extra white paint and dry paint to add a uniform look to the wood planks!
I painted more pallet wood the same color as the chairs and placed it under the chairs as an extra support beam.

Once the seat is installed and the paint is completely dry, you’ll probably want to cover the seat before going outside.
The exterior paint itself cannot be covered, but the wooden pallet should be covered. I used acrylic spray paint. Don’t forget to do the edges and bottom corner too!
I can imagine this bike bench will soak up many a yard under the stars. We still have plenty of spring left to enjoy on this bench before winter sets in.
How To Update A Pair Of Worn Out Chairs
You can certainly make your backyard bike bench your own with your choice of exterior paint color. If you want to beautify this outdoor bench even more, you can paint some additional decorations.
This backyard bike bench is easy to make. It’s a great beginner DIY project because there’s little investment involved. I bet you can find lots of options for old chairs at your local thrift store or Facebook Marketplace, CraigsList. You might even get some for free like I did!

We’ve found that many couples don’t know how to start remodeling their home, which is why we’re passionate about teaching others how to turn their home into the home they want – one DIY at a time. Post Rose Corner Where and a little more. champagne corks and cages were added to my collection so I was reminded of a fun way to use them – to make champagne chairs. A small Lean Luxuri that can be given as a gift. These little chairs sit on my dining room table and I can’t tell you how much love they get. I love using them to hold name cards or just to add color to the center of the dining room table. I also like to give gifts to friends for a special celebration – it’s best when you keep a special drinking bottle cage – that’s what they have a little memory of for years to come. With new wood all year round, I think these would make great decorations for a summer tree or even a Christmas tree.
This is a quick little project for an afternoon champagne party – maybe you enjoy a drink or maybe you just want to fix something nice – either way it’s not too overwhelming and you’ll be ready in minutes. You can make a special sign on the side of the chair and give it to someone – I guarantee they will love having it on their desk.
