I’ve always loved the look of metal chairs and the durability is great. One thing about metal chairs is that they have a solid seat. Unless you have a padded chair, they don’t encourage you to sit around the table.

A few years ago I realized we could make a modern metal chair for our family by making leather seat cushions. It’s been a few years since I made these pillows and since then I’ve blessed other people with leather pillows and chairs but I still love this project and wanted to update the tutorial and share it with you.

Seat pads are simple and effective, right?! Before we get to the tutorial, let’s talk about metal chairs.
We bought 4 sets when we moved into this house (because you can get 4 sets for $150 or less). If you’re new here, we’ve moved from 1,400 square feet to this home (3,800 square feet). When we moved here there were no furniture. Therefore, these chairs were an affordable purchase that we can use in the dining room, kitchen or living room when we need more chairs. They are great chairs for moving around, sitting at the table (especially when we have play dates) and making extras when we have extra people.
The not so great thing about the seats is that they don’t have padding. When our little one was little, I didn’t want to quilt. Another thing is smudges, right? But as I got older, I began to crave a slightly softer chair.

Leather Hideaway contacted me to see if I wanted to try some of their leather upholstery, so I jumped at the chance. They all have different skin tones, but I was especially drawn to the brown leather options.
I knew I wanted medium leather for the seat of the chair and something with a little flair. I wanted a piece that had or had some imperfections. Basically, I wanted it to fit in with our kid-friendly activities without worrying about whether or not we’d go out.

Let’s come to the tutorial. I’d say it’s pretty simple (about 30 minutes per chair pad). I’m a beginner when it comes to sewing, if I can do it, so can you!
Seriously, if you can sew a pillow, you can sew leather seat cushions for chairs. One thing to note though is that working with leather is definitely more challenging than working with delicate fabrics. I have an old sewing machine that definitely struggles with leather, but it gets the job done. So, be aware if you haven’t worked with leather before.
Honestly, I’d recommend trying this project, but I understand if it’s out of your skill set or you want to buy chair cushions. If buying a leather chair cushion is your cup of tea, here are some great options:

As I mentioned before, this project is something I did a few years ago. She loved it, but after a few years she didn’t like the way the white chairs worked in our space. I still think adding seat cushions to metal chairs is a great way to add more character to spaces, make chairs more comfortable, and make the overall aesthetic of a dining space more welcoming. We still have black metal chairs in our old dining room, and last year, I added a fur seat cushion to them! This seriously increased the comfort factor there. I could have added round leather pillows in there, but we’ve found fur while traveling and love it.

This tutorial can be helpful if your chairs are already well upholstered but are unattractive or don’t coordinate with your space. If you choose the right upholstery, upholstering your chairs can transform your dining room from looking dull, dark, and dated, to looking vibrant, elegant, and comfortable.
Reupholstering Dining Chair Cushions
Before you gather any supplies, you need to create a few things. The type of upholstery you use plays an important role in the overall look of your dining room. So it is important to understand what color your dining room is and whether it matches or contrasts with it. For example, if your walls are green, you should avoid using red, which gives a strong and unattractive contrast.
In addition, when choosing the color of the material, pay attention to the size of your dining room. Bright colors are needed to make a small room look spacious and not cluttered. Finally, the choice should be determined by how often the chair(s) will be used. Small children in the house need heavier items that are not easily damaged or stained.
Remove staples/nail removers and foam. My chair only had staples in it and I managed to get them out with a screwdriver and flat pliers. If there are screws, use this tool to pull them out.

Cut the foam with either an incredibly sharp serrated knife (think media knife width) or a buffer knife. We used an incredibly sharp kitchen knife!
Take the seat + foam and place it on the polyester padding. Trace and cut about 5″ from the edge.
Use a staple gun to secure the batting to the bottom, pulling it tight as you go. Tip: It’s best to staple opposite sides until you have about a dozen staples – this way the tightness is uniform.
Supportive Seat Cushions For Office Chairs
Position the seat so that the pattern is centered and even, allowing it to protrude at least 4 inches from the bottom.
The print of this is still visible on the wrong side so I can see where the marks and cuts are to get the piece I need for the seat cushion. Staple to secure and trim off the excess.
Tip: Install in batting before starting stapling to ensure evenness of the print.
How To Reupholster A Chair Seat

For the pattern, any type of paper or cardboard will work. I chose a large piece of cardboard because it was stiff and flat on the curved seat of the chair.
To make sure my pattern was symmetrical, I cut out half of the pillow shape and duplicated one more time.
Meanwhile, take a piece of paper. You should make notes of all of your pattern pieces along with their corresponding measurements to calculate yardage.

You will need a total of five pattern pieces. The pillow top, the base of the pillow, the side panel tape (based on the height of your foam insert), the back tape piece (it will serve as an envelope flap for the back of your pillow), and two ties.
Important: Remember to add seam allowance. It is the area between the edge of the raw fabric and the seam.
They can range from ¼ inch (6.4 mm) to several inches wide. However, how wide you want yours to be is up to you. I usually use a 5/8 inch (1.5 cm) seam allowance.
