How To Make A Chair Into A Glider
The price was reasonable. Honestly, what I was looking at was a $2,000 appliance repair and I just couldn’t justify it. I lamented this fact to my friend when he suggested, “why not do a DIY”? He pointed me in the direction of the base of the glider and my brain was spinning.

These bases are specially designed as replacements for luxury seats, but they also work well for a new DIY car. I picked up this armchair at IKEA that looks exactly like the $2,000 one I picked up at Restoration Hardware. Then the base was ordered, and after Saturday morning, while Daphne slept in the other room, Garrett and I assembled this plane in less than an hour. What’s more, most of this DIY looks like a bunch of recycled tools. I am happy with the final product!
Chair- I chose a wheelchair because the kids are messy, but a wheelchair will work too. Just make sure you choose a seat that has a hidden bottom so you can’t see the bottom of the glider when it’s done. budget
3/4″ plywood, cut to the size of your seat bottom (for the Farlow we cut 32″ x 36″)

1″ screws to secure the base to the plywood (we used 4 screws, but you may need more depending on the base you choose)
Raise the legs of your chair. When installing a new chair from IKEA, don’t just add legs.
Attach the plywood to the bottom of your chair with 1 3/4″ (or longer) notches. Make sure the screws go into the wood frame of the seat. We used about 10 screws.
How To Turn A Chair Into A Glider/rocker
Attach the bottom of the glider to the plywood with 1″ screws. Placing the base is the hardest part of this whole DIY. We first attached the base to the center of the deck, but then finally moving it back onto the bench was flushed.move the base around until you like how the stone bench looks.

It needed to be attractive, comfortable and easy to clean, so I was leaning towards something with a slide on cover. However, the cost of one stood in my way to achieve this dream. Especially since I’m drooling over the Pottery Barn shelves. After months of looking for a better price or a used one, I finally settled on the Ektorp chair from Ikea. It was cheap, comfortable, smooth, and everything except the cover was good old American made (I’m a sucker for buying things in America). problem, it’s not a slide!
We decided to buy a rotating base with batteries instead of a fully adjustable one, but they also sell adjustable parts. If you really want to buy, you can find a recliner for sale on craigslist or bookcoo and just use it. We started by taking the legs and attaching a 1/2 thick piece of wood to the bottom of the seats. So we just attached the glider to this piece of wood, one of the easiest jobs I’ve ever done with my husband.
The end result is a beautiful pottery that looks like a shutter that I absolutely love! The good thing is, if I want to put it back on the couch, I can do it very easily!

*UPDATE* I received a comment a few days ago asking about the exact part I bought for the chair, I will post a link to the part page for anyone interested. I bought item #154 which is $79.95 and fits the Ektorp large chair perfectly. Now I want to clarify that this is the part where the chair is not like a rocking chair, it can move back and forth and side to side, but if you are looking for a glider motion, You should buy a glider part as well. found on this site more expensive and honestly I rock my baby in this seat all the time and never complain. We are. The big-ticket item for preschool. The one I’m sure I’m most worried about fighting, but it can save you a lot of money in the end.
I searched and searched for tutorials on how to do this, although none of them seemed to match what I was looking for. There were a few key things I really wanted when restoring the glider — 1) Zippers: Velk doesn’t hold up well over time, and I didn’t get them ( and I didn’t want to invest) an immediate exception is not. . And 2) Covers should be removed and washed. Attach or attach these covers to any part of the seat. Who knows where the spit (or marks) will end up, so it’s important to be able to wash it off and not just have a clean place.
So I did a little bit of one lesson and a little bit of another, taught myself how to attach a zipper, and suddenly I got a lot better. I think it brings a lot more to the room than your colors moving around ma.ma.ma. I can’t say enough – it washes away. All the last pieces of paper. The first thing you want to start with here is an old skate that has probably seen better days. I came from a home with 3 kids and they loved it, especially the markers. The key to finding here is that the cushions are still good (and the seat is comfortable for you!) and the frame is still strong. I am? $25 from Craigslist.
Once you’ve brought home your crazy bargain, it’s time to fully examine what you have. Draw all the boards and note how they are attached. Is it because of the tires? And Velcro? image? Or it may be tied over the face (common among the Ottomans).

Let’s start with the “easiest” part, shall we? Back pillows Most of these pillows look like a giant tombstone, but don’t worry if your pillow is a little different. Go ahead and lay out your fabric (iron in half lengthwise, so you should have a 4-yard piece of fabric the width of the button), then place the pillow in whatever pattern goes in the required side. Cut out the excess fabric, leaving about 1 1/2″ at the top and sides and about 2″ at the bottom. (And really, it doesn’t have to be perfect here. I think I just cut the remaining fabric 2″ below the pillow.)
Tata Now it’s time to get more personal. Make marks on the sides and top of your pillow, 1″ away from the pillow. When you get to the bottom of your pillow, switch marks 2″ apart.
For all of you out there who need to use the template, this section might be a bit confusing for you. We play “connect the dots” and print out our own pillows. Your line should be 1″ from the top and sides and 2″ from the bottom.
