How To Make A Simple End Table – My husband and I recently moved, and during the transition we (obviously) did a lot of remodeling. We changed the furniture to fit our new situation and quickly realized that we needed a new sofa. We looked around for something simple and cheap to use. After a few days of surfing the web and stopping at all the stores we wanted, we realized that there weren’t many that fit the bill, so I decided to come up with something that offered put together quickly. This sideboard is simple, serves the purpose, and in my opinion looks better than anything I’ve seen for sale. Also, it is a good place to present my articles.
The design for this is pretty simple – I finished a project I did last year (bookcases for Dunn’s studio) and changed the dimensions. Let’s go to it!
How To Make A Simple End Table
In the measurement, we do our part to match our chair. To fit in your home, measure the height of the arm of the chair (or couch) that your last chair will be next to. As we learned from Keith Miller, the height of your end chair should not be more than 2″ lower or higher than the couch or bed. Our end table is 24″ high and 15″ wide (15″ is based on beauty). I keep it simple and go with good numbers – no part here.

Before starting to cut, adjust the circle to an angle of 45 °. Make sure the depth of the blade is set long enough so that it cuts straight through the wood. The Milwaukee circular saw has a different angle to accommodate a 45° cut (as opposed to a straight cut), so be sure to follow that. You can use a miter saw for this too.
Make the first cut at the end of the board. (This is the end of your first piece and the starting point for measuring.) Using a straight edge or square square, start trading two 24″ pieces and two 15″ pieces. Draw a line all the way across the width of the tree. Measure and cut each part individually or the cut (the cut in the wood made by the width of the blade) will throw away your measurements.
If you’re using wood like I am, you’ll want to sand it well (to get furniture grade). To save time and trouble, use 150-grit sandpaper and an electric sander. Be sure to go over the edges and sand from the dirt or marks. Like 150-grit sandpaper because it’s coarse enough to remove large mistakes, and it’s fine enough that I don’t feel the need to go in with new grit. But it’s all about you! Sand as much or as little as you want.

I opted out of natural wood, but you can decorate this however you like. I’m tempted to paint the inside like I did with the shadow boxes in Dunn’s studio, but I want my books and trinkets to be the color show here. Leaving it bare also means it’s easier if we renovate, renovate or move again. You can stain, coat with polyurethane, or follow me by not touching.
Note: We went for something temporary for our room, but if you want something that will last, think about a clean finish and no germs.
My biggest goal for this collection is to have perfect lines with perfect seams. I’ve tried wood glue and epoxy, quick drying glue (that doesn’t need much drying time) and glue that needs to be pressed overnight. After repeating this process half a dozen times, I came to a conclusion: it all ends pretty much the same. It’s all close to perfect, but the extra effort doesn’t seem to make a difference. Even when glued perfectly, the nails still pull in different ways and create a bit of hanging. And since we are working with a thicker material than we did for the container, it is more difficult to fix the glue. Most importantly, this means that the project is quick and easy, not your own. Some flaws add to the charm.

So here’s my tip: Use quick-drying glue for this project, because it will give you more grip when you handle the wood. Then find a friend to hold the seams together while you pre-drill and add the screws. Otherwise, do the best you can with your own hands.
For practice, you drill two holes in each corner to attach each piece. Be careful what you pierce! Hide the screws by drilling into the bottom of the foundation and into the sides of the roof so that they are not visible. Use 2 1/2″ screws.
And that’s it! It took me less than an hour to throw together, and it was a reasonable price – wood is under $20. I love this product, which also happens to be super customizable. You can choose different sizes and shapes, short and turn into stools, put a shelf in the middle, paint or paint it – that’s it

Start by cutting the boards on the miter saw. Naturally, you will need a miter saw to make a 5 degree miter cut.
I chose to use 2×3 boards for the cross support. But before I use the 2×3 I like to rip the edges and make them square. I used my table saw to rip it about 1/8″ on each side.
For the cross support of this sideboard I used half joints. And you can cut these letters with a jigsaw or scroll saw. Although I prefer the scroll chain because I have more control.

I bought a board that was 18″ x 36″. I measured and drew a line down the middle so that I had 2 table tops measuring 18″ x 18″. Obviously you only need one, but since I was planning to make a group I wanted a few. I use a jigsaw to cut wood.
