It’s been a while since the furniture was painted. When you’re checking out with your partner and you see a pair of side chairs for just $5 each, you’ve decided to build a room in no time! Let me show you how to make a painted bamboo chair.
How To Make Simple Bamboo Chair
While we’re on the subject, what style would you say these chairs are? Bamboo, Chinoiserie, Hollywood Regency? I have seen them referred to as all of them. For this post, I’ll just call them the bamboo style.

After a little research, I found that these particular chairs come in this cream and dark wood veneer. The floral fabric is original and has a light pink sheen over time.
Imagine my surprise this week when I searched the internet for more information and found this:
When posting the tutorial, don’t paint the chairs the exact same color as the canvas 😂 I also realized at this point that the color shade is too blue for my house. However, when I started this project, not with my heart, not with my head. I fell in love with this fabric and drew the blue from there. While it’s a nice combination, it’s not the right shade for my home.

So, I had to make some adjustments. I couldn’t repaint the chairs because there is no yard in my townhouse. The painting is done in Jen’s backyard. In addition, I needed to find new inspiring fabrics and figure out how to reduce blue light.
Disclaimer – I’m not a professional restorer, but this method works for me. I had a dark gel stain on my neck (not visible). Washing the gel stain with a soft, lint-free cloth is added to the bamboo seat. After a few minutes, I cleaned up the stain. This was the perfect solution, which you will see later in this post.
When covering a sofa or chair cushion, I usually use the previous cover.

There’s no way I’m going to put this next to my new chinoiserie fabric. Isn’t it weird?
I think the chair needed a bit more. The existing ones were so flat that I just switched to 2 inch foam. This foam is leftover from a padded mattress and sewing pillow project.
Pin all four sides in place, making sure the fabric is taut. Wrap the cookies well and seal. Push the seat back into place.

For small bamboo sticks, we simply cut them in half, so 120 cm or 47 inches is 4 sticks.
After sewing, as seen in this picture, we continue to sew a hole on the side of all (6) large bamboo sticks. About 10 cm or 4 inches from the edge is good enough.

When you’re done drilling, save 2 of them for later use. Let’s start with the page. The hole will help you know where to use their round design so you get symmetrical boxes on both sides. Look at this picture:
After this drilling and picking, you will be left with bamboo scraps in a round shape, keep them. We like to give everything a purpose and we still do!
We make 10 mm (0.4 inch) holes in the small bamboo sticks, spaced according to the size of our large bamboo. As a picture is worth a thousand words, you will understand better from this picture:

In terms of size, we use 2.60 m x 0.70 m (8 ft 6.3 x 2 ft 3.5 in) fabric, which allows us to remove it for cleaning if needed.
If you decide to just order the fabric from your local sewer, choose the color you want and pay for the size. If you have a sewing machine at home, follow these steps:
First you need to turn 1 cm or 0.4 inch from the edge and sew the seam to prevent the fabric from tearing.

And we are ready to place the fabric around the bamboo structure and move on to the next step. Our chair is hanging!
Depending on the configuration of your balcony or garden, you need to choose the right place to hang the rocking chair, so the possibilities are endless. In our case, one of the porch posts is suitable.
We use hanging ties to attach the square bamboo frame to the frame. This allows us to remove the structure and fabric for cleaning and put them back together in less than a minute.
Should You Choose Bamboo For Furniture
For each chair, we need 2 sets of cords to measure the length to the desired height of the top of the chair, and 2 sets of double the length of the chair for the bottom of the chair, which should be up to the knees.
In our case, we used 60 cm (1 ft 11 in) and 120 cm (3 ft 11 in) ropes and made hanging knots at each end.
These threaded fasteners are easy to open and when weight is placed on them, they close securely, holding the seat frame in place.

Attach the 4 wires to the main bamboo rod, remember that these wires should be inside to prevent them from slipping.
The next step is to attach the 4 wires to the frame and tighten the screws at the corners. Your chair is ready to hang.
