How To Make A Tub Chair
We recently made our son a simple little bench to use in the bath. We are sitting or kneeling in a strange bathtub.
Louise Tub Chair
By adding a bathtub bench, we can sit down and reduce the pressure on our homes. It is easy to sit and recline in the bath to help babies bathe.
This tub set is based on our standard insert tube, but it can be adjusted if your tub is not a standard width. If you need a shower seat, this will work as long as you have two sides to extend the seat.
I started measuring the tub. This is a standard shower/bathtub, but make sure you measure the tub bench first.

I measured from the edge of the tub to the wall, and calculated each curved area.
My entire bench is 28 inches wide. I used 3/4 inch thick cedar for this project because cedar holds up well in hot climates.
We all like to sand first before cutting, drilling and assembling. This makes it easy to tie up when it’s ready.

Finally, cut a piece of 4″x4″ support to hold the seat in front of the tub wall. Add two pocket holes on one side.
Start by attaching the slats to the end of each side piece. I used the Craig jig pocket holes to attach it to make it secure while I sat on it.
Once the top was built, I moved it to the pipe to make sure the support was in place. I used the hole in the drawer again to firmly attach this piece to the underside of the bench.
Hoffman Style Tub Chair
Even though it’s cedar, I decided to finish everything with a coat of urethane spar for extra protection.
I love that it has a removable seat that we can remove when guests use the shower. For us, this bath bench is perfect for our baby to stand on while bathing in his bath.

I like the idea but your measurements confuse me a bit. 24″x4″ I think 3 1×4 x 28″, 4″x4″ is the post for me, I also guess 1 1x4x4″? Can anyone guess? I think I understand this but it may be confusing for new readers.

Sorry if that wasn’t clear to you, Scott. Everything is made with standard 1″ boards, so basically 3/4″ thick. When 4″x4″, it means two sides, meaning that the third length is the thickness, which is 3/4.
