Buying seat covers can be expensive, especially if you have a bunch of seats to cover. Fortunately, you can make your own for very little money. You can use quilt covers to cover the backs and seats of dining chairs, make beautiful chair covers for special events, or make a custom one-piece chair.

To make a chair cover, start by selecting 2 matching covers, one for the back of the chair and one for the cushion. Next, remove the seat cover and cut a piece of fabric 4 inches larger than the cover on each side to cover the bottom of the seat. Then place the pillow over the pillow and attach it to the seat at 2 inch intervals. Finally, place the second cover on the back of the seat, making sure the seam is on top. Do you have furniture in your home that you love the most but just need a little updating? I do it because I’m a fan of garage sales, estate sales and, in general, anything with a history (and a low price).

I got these beautiful chairs from Craigslist a few years ago and fell in love as soon as I sat in one. These are probably the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever owned. I also liked their custom rose pattern, even though it didn’t go with any of my decor.

Fast forward a few years, and while I still love the original upholstery on the chairs, I can no longer deny that they need a little updating to match the rest of the living room.

I reluctantly agreed and we put our silly heads together and came up with a plan. I didn’t want to just start attaching new fabric to the seats (my usual M.O. involves hot glue or glue), because one day I might want to reuse them in their original state.

So I decided to make simple shoes for them, which turned out to be easier than I expected.

Since my chairs are in a classic L shape, this project turned out to be relatively easy. The L shape also works great for parson style dining chairs. If you have a different style that you are trying to update, you can still use these steps, but the measurements may not be as easy.

Remember that if your fabric has a large pattern (called a “repeat” in the design), you’ll want to line up the lines as much as possible, so you may need to buy extra fabric. to move the map around. eyes

I measured from the bottom of the seat back, up and around and forward. Then I measured the pieces of the “L” on each side. Then I had to figure out how to fit all those pieces onto one piece of fabric.

Once you’ve chosen your fabric, grab a skein of matching yarn. (Use heavy duty if using a shoe polish.)

Then create your form. This doesn’t have to be technical or scary. It’s just a way to get your measurements on the fabric. Mark your measurements on the back of the fabric with a pencil or ruler.

Remember to line up any lines or designs you want to meet at the edges in your fabric. My fabric only has a subtle pattern, so I opted for that, but it ended up being much easier to work with. The result!

Remember to leave a few inches under the seat to line up the entire piece.

Now cut your pieces. When you cut out the pattern, make sure you leave about an inch around each edge for seam allowance. (It’s the edge that folds inward to prevent seams.)

Now place the fabric upside down on the seat. Use straight pins to fasten the fabric pieces around the edges of the chair. Place the pins as close to the seat as possible so you can get a good grip and use a lot of pins (every few inches).

Use your sewing machine to sew the entire row you’ve made with your needles, removing each needle as you go. Don’t worry about the bottom edge yet.

Now try placing the right side cover on top of the seat. If there are any areas that look too tight or loose, you will need to adjust them. It looks boring, but it’s really not that bad.

Once your quilt is snug, you’ll want to line up the bottom of the entire “skirt”. Simply fold the fabric twice inside and sew to the bottom.

It will give you a nice clean sound without too much noise. (If you want more complexity, you can add a pretty piece at the bottom to finish it off.)

Finally, put the cover on, pull the excess fabric under the back of the seat and adjust everything.

And you’re done! It looks like you have brand new chairs, for the price of just a few yards of fabric and without asking for a sample.

Then, since I stole the pillows from the bed, I just had to get a new Ikat pillow from World Market to top it all off.
