But my favorite part of the mixer is that I can create parts that fit perfectly on the table with a simple shop-made jig.

It’s about the jig. Of course, the parts must fit perfectly for the connection to be successful, and this level of precision often means careful planning is required. But by adding a bit of customization to your clamps, you won’t waste much time adjusting the fit. The important thing is how to make the jig and attach it to the miter gauge.

The backsplash is mounted to the diagonal pitch with scissors. It also has a larger opening for the handle and front wire attachment. These holes make it easy to “change” the distance between the left and right cutouts.

Front fencing is part of the real estate business. It has a hardwood key that slides from the blade across the width of the cut to control the position of the pins. It also supports the workpiece to prevent tearing while cutting. The jig is so easy that I usually create a new jig for each project rather than trying to fit it to different sized finger joints.

You can start building the device by choosing a flat material for the front fence (I choose Baltic birch plywood). The back fence may be a single piece of hardwood or may be milled straight. To facilitate repair, drill larger screw holes in the rear cable using a drill bit with a larger diameter than the screws used to secure the front cable.

Set clips and buttons. The image below shows how to start creating fixtures. Start by installing a set of dado blades to match the thickness of the pin to your project. For the mechanic’s chest, I chose 1/4 inch wide studs for the 1/2 inch thick pieces.

After installing the wainscoting blade, set the height below the thickness of the workpiece. Then keep the front wire in place (do not slide it in) and cut the wire.

Now you need to cut a small piece of hardwood for a wrench. A good fit is important, but not so tight that you have to force the wire through. Make the key piece long enough to be trimmed and used as a spacer. Now slide the tool over the dado blade and place the spacer between the outer teeth of the blade and the index key. With the wire still in place, you can now attach it to the back wire.

To limit testing. Using several test pieces of the same thickness and width as the design section, make the first notch sharply against the key. Each subsequent cut is made by applying a newly cut groove to the key.

Once all the notches are cut, turn the piece over and use the first pin as a spacer. The butt of the mating workpiece is still cut. When you’re done, check the fit. I like the fitted cut, but it doesn’t taper a bit to get the right effect. You can adjust the pin alignment by slightly moving the front bezel as shown in the box below.

Cut the joints. After fitting the jig, you can proceed to cutting design work. But there are a few things to keep in mind when making carpentry cuts. First, always hold the workpiece firmly against the wire. For larger projects, especially those with wide and long pieces made of 3/4″ material, you can attach the tool to the wire for added safety and precision.

The second thing to pay attention to is making sure the end of the piece rests on the table every time you cut. It can be frustrating when during assembly one of the pins is not cut well enough.

With that in mind, all you have to do is get busy and cut expenses. It’s helpful to mark the workpiece to make sure you start cutting from the same edge. I also pause after each mating setup to make sure I’m doing it right and the jig isn’t “lifting” out of position. The check only takes a minute and can prevent serious problems in the future. But as long as things are going well, you’ll find that work goes fast.

Well-cut cubes are easy to assemble and stay square. The main problem was to join the joints quickly enough before applying the glue. A small brush made it easy to apply a thin layer of glue to all the joints, but it was still difficult to put everything together. Once the glue is applied, all you need to do is tap and seal the seam.

Fill. In the photo below you can see how I cut the sides of the machine box. Several plywood spacers go inside and keep the joint spaced apart while you apply pressure to pull the joint together. You can fully tighten the sides with a few taps on the ends and then tighten the clamps.
