I’m working with less fabric for this DIY pillow (the stripes look black in the photo above, but they’re actually light blue/grey).
I found the plywood I needed in my trusty scrap pile and cut it to the dimensions of our clay table:
Note the slightly rounded corners – I like to do this so the fabric isn’t pointing at anything. Over time it wears into the fabric.

You’ll want to check out the bench cushion tutorial for the next two steps in detail, but here’s my big secret: I use egg crate foam from the craft store instead of thick upholstery foam.
It’s cheap (especially during fall back-to-school sales) and it gets the job done. (And you’ll have more to work with!)
If you use thin layers of egg foam, regular scissors will cut it just fine.
Make Your Own Outdoor Cushions!
I like to use a spray adhesive on both wood and foam. Place both items outside on a drop of cloth or grass before spraying.
After securing the foam to the board, wrap a light cloth like muslin around it to keep everything in place. You can also use batting if you want it cheesier.
Make sure the width and length of your bench cloth are at least six inches longer than the hardwood floor. Even more if you make your pillow thicker.

Make sure you have plenty of fabric to work with when covering hardwood and foam floors!
Lay the top of the fabric face down and use a basic stapler to secure the fabric to the bottom of your board.
Take your time when wearing a pinstripe fabric – you may notice if it doesn’t line up perfectly!

If you do this, you will scroll to the sides and see where you added each staple.
I usually leave the corners for the last step and fold them in as neatly as possible to see the corner of the box at the short ends of the pillow:
It’s like making a bed: pull the excess fabric to one side, then pull the sheet/folded edge down and secure under the wood with a screwdriver.

I’ve never had a problem with my bench cushion slipping, but if you do, try this easy soap cushion slip hack. It is a cheap and fast solution!
With a long needle and thick waxed cord, you can easily knit your bench cushion. Or add some decorative embellishments with a hot glue gun to add extra detail!

I loved the look of the thick box style chair cushions without the tubes. I’m not a fan of plumbing because it’s a place where dust or food collects.
I don’t like having a loop on the cushions that goes around the back of the chairs to hold the cushions to the chairs. I wanted a river line look and had to find a way to secure the cushions to the chairs without using ties.
I went online and from fabric store to fabric store in my area to find the perfect blue and white fabric that wasn’t $50 a yard. I found the perfect fabric at JoAnn Fabrics in the decorative fabrics section. It was created by Waverly and is called Seeing Dots.

Once I had the fabric, I had to figure out how to make chair cushions with removable covers so they could be easily washed when needed.
One of my most popular blog posts is how to make pillow covers. I could have made these for the chairs, but since the shape of the seats is neither square nor rectangular, the not-so-new way of making cushions wasn’t going to work as easily.

If you sew, I’m sure you have a proven way of making kitchen chair cushions. My sewing skills are limited. I can sew a straight line, so I came up with the perfect way to make chair cushions.
I did a little of both… I used my sewing and no sewing skills to make my quilts. I even learned one of the tricks I used when working in retail display to help cushions stay secure without tying.
The nice thing about making your own chair cushions is that they fit perfectly on your chairs. Thicker foam can be expensive to make mattresses. If you want to save money, wait until the foam goes on sale at your local fabric store like JoAnn Fabrics or Hobby Lobby to save money.
How To Build A Window Seat Cushion
I made my chair cushions to look like box style cushions. I wanted to clean and remove them easily. Sewing a zipper is not part of my skill set, I know my limitations, so I use safety pins or Velcro to close the seams instead.
1. Glue pieces of printer paper together so you can make a pattern. The glued piece of paper should be slightly larger than the seat of the chair.
2. Place the paper on the edge of a table and place the chair face down on the table. Use a pencil to trace around the seat of the chair. Cut the lines with scissors.

3. Lay the paper over the seat and use scissors to trim the paper if necessary so that the paper is the same shape and size as the seat of the chair. This will be your model.
4. Place your pattern on the 2″ thick foam. Trace around the shape with a marker.
5. Use large scissors or an electric knife to trim the foam. Electric knives make this process quick and easy.

6. I don’t have a photo showing how I sewed the 2 quilt batting together to make a pocket to put the pillow in.
I cut two pieces of batting slightly larger than the cut foam and sewed them together with a zipper foot. I used it to make it smooth on the bat.
The batting can catch on the sewing foot, to reduce this, place your fingers in front of the batting to lay it flat as you sew.

7. Turn the batting bag over so that the sides of the seams are on the inside. Put the pillow inside. Folding the pillow first makes it easier to fit into the batting bag.
8. Cut the edge of the batting according to the foam. This will be to the rear of the open space area.
