Recently, I decided to design and build a new rocking chair. I have designed and built a few rockers, but my past efforts have not been as successful as I would have liked. I was confident in my ability to create a comfortable “regular” seat, but it seemed like I was dealing with a completely different rocker problem. So I decided to make the rocking chair “work” to look a little better than before. I wanted to understand the geometry of the rocking chair in hopes of improving my overall results.

A rocking chair has many factors at play. In addition to the general requirements that the chair be structurally sound, comfortable and good looking (these are my requirements at least), the rocker adds the challenge of dynamic movement.

First we will need a jig to make the rockers. I just took a 15 x 5.0 x 90 cm piece of wood and cut a curve on one side. As long as the cut is symmetrical, we don’t care how big the curve is.
To make the rockers you will need 6 strips of wood 3.0 cm wide, 0.8 cm high and 85 cm long. Apply wood glue to all the strips and place them on the jig. Apply pressure using several clamps, using sacrificial tape. You should make two pieces like this.
After you have your piece ready you now need to make the laces so that you can fit the boot to the seat. The mesh must be 5.0 cm from the edge of each rocker. I used a machine designed for this job, but you can always use a chisel and hammer and you’ll get the same results. The car does nothing but speed it up a bit.

Cut 4 pieces of wood 80 x 2.5 x 7 cm for the four legs. At your mark, make a dowel for each leg. This tenon should fit into the rocker arm.
Time to add seat support. Again we will use the mortise and tenon technique to join the parts together.
A chair is another piece of wood just like the legs. Place it at an angle with the leg and mark where you want to make the mortise. Chisel again to make the pedals and adjust the seat support. Glue all the pieces together using wood glue and some clamps. Let the glue dry overnight.

We need to add support rails to hold the two sides of the chair together. For the front and back rails I used two pieces of wood 60 x 2.5 x 7 cm. I used a mortise and tenon technique for the front and a 10mm dowel for the back.
For the back I made an 80 x 60 cm frame and drilled some grooves in the top and bottom pieces to fit the boards. Ribs made from 0.8 x 4.0 x 73 cm pieces of wood using a router with all corners rounded and slightly rounded.
Use a 10mm dowel and a 10mm drill bit to attach the backs as shown in the pictures.
Identifying Antique Rocking Chairs
For the seat I used a 30 mm thick wooden table in my workshop. It is solid and the same type of wood I used. I only need to make it 55 x 60 cm to fit between the backs of the chairs. Then I used some screws to secure it in place.
My first thought was to have the arms slightly curved, but then I thought that curved arms look better and straight ones look better too. So I used two pieces of wood 50 x 7.0 x 2.5 cm. Lay them on dry and make two slits to hold the back of the chair. When I made these slots, I didn’t need to add more support rails to the back. I rounded all the edges with my router and attached them with wood glue and wood clips.
Now you have a beautiful rocking chair. My wife already loved the one I made for her, but I’m a little jealous, so I make one for myself too.

You can use any type of finish you want. You can paint it or just use varnish to show the wood. I love unfinished furniture, partly because I know that when it comes to a piece with a lot of parts, like this baby rocker, I can’t do it for less. But unfinished furniture comes with many challenges.
First, here’s how I filled the nail holes using Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler. After it dried and hardened, I sanded it and the wood using medium grit sandpaper.
Also, the wood used in unfinished furniture usually absorbs stains unevenly, so after my first sanding I brush on a coat of water-based Minwax® and pre-stain conditioner to reduce spots and stains.

After the wood conditioner was completely dry, I lightly sanded it and applied my water-based Minwax® wood stain using island water to give it the blue color I wanted. I clean it with a soft cloth and immediately wipe off the excess stain, going in the direction of the grain of each piece.
Having raised two sons, I know how kids can be tough on furniture, so I decided to make my new rocker look old. So the last scratches and scratches will look normal! Also, I like the old look, so I lightly sanded some of the spots on the parts that would normally see more use over the decades.
Brushing the finish on the stairs and battens takes time, so I opted for an aerosol version of Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish with a semi-gloss finish. At first, I just applied two thin coats.

Then I let them dry and reach for my stencil. I had a choice of Minwax® Express Color™ Wiping Stain & Finish or Minwax® Gel Stain to lightly dab my stencil with a natural sea sponge. This time I chose an onyx from the Color Express line, being careful not to stain too much so it could run under the stencil. My advice: apply lightly, let dry, apply lightly, let dry, repeat, repeat, repeat.
After I finished my stencil, I let it dry and then came back later to spray three more coats of Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish over the entire chair, including the stenciled letters. When I was done, I had a new, durable crib that looked as old as a more delicate antique.
Coming from a family of do-it-yourselfers, I have fond memories of helping with projects in my father’s basement workshop and repurposing antiques in my grandmother’s backyard. There I fell in love with the beauty of wood grain, either hidden under old black or marked with a new coat of stain.
