We have been looking for a set of bar stools for a while. However, our countertop bar is 47 inches long. For the right fit, I was looking for a 33 inch tall bar stool…not easy to find.
How To Make A Bar Stool With A Back
The foot of the stool has two bevels and bevels that allow it to angle towards the center of the top of the stool (like a standard round stool). The ends are all parallel to each other, so you slide your board along the saw from your first cut to your second cut. No need to flip 2×2 or anything like that. I shot my 2×2 about 1.2 billion times to figure it out…

Because the legs are angled, the length you cut will not be exactly the length of the stool you end up with. If you want the stool to be exactly 33 inches long, the actual legs will be 32-9/16 inches. You can fit it using triangles and a little trigonometry… or you can cut the legs to the length of the stool (minus the thickness of the stool top) as it won't make much of a difference.
Mark the top corner of your stool leg as you cut it. It is difficult to know which angle goes to the center of the stool because it has an angle of 5 °. like this:
Attach both legs to the bench with 4-inch top brackets. I centered the top brace on the legs, but that's up to you. It doesn't affect the overall size if you line it up in the middle or flush with the front or back of your foot. Repeat for the other two legs.

And yes… that's my kitchen. It's too cold to install it outside. I can no longer stand in the garage, so the kitchen island has become the new workbench 🙂
The crossbars are all drilled and mounted on the back of the frame. I filled the pocket hole at the end but I still wanted to place it towards the inside of the stool so it wouldn't be too noticeable.
Fill all visible pocket holes. I like to use Kreg Wood Pocket Hole Plugs or Wood Fillers.

After putting the pocket hole fabric in place and letting it dry, sand it and finish it with your favorite stain or paint.

We were a bit disappointed when Toliy had to go back to college in the fall, there wasn't enough time to make a matching bar stool.

So when Toliy texted over Christmas break, saying he was home for a few days and wanted to work on that shit, I said,
We used scrap wood (including 3/4″ construction plywood) and 2x2s ripped from leftover 2x4s (you can use 2x2s off the shelf) to make this stool.
One thing that complicated this build was that we knew this stool would get a lot of use, and since it was taller than the original stool, we didn't want to just use the floor flange. Then we welded the 3/4″ nut to the 1/8″ thick metal plate. If you don't have a welder, call your welding shop and throw in some nuts and have them welded to a scrap plate – it's cheaper than buying a flange (it can be expensive).

We love this stool and how it turned out, but it's not a beginner's project. Please do not try this as your first project.
2 – 2×2 @ 12-1/2″ – both ends cut 10 degrees from square, ends NOT equal, measure highest point to highest point 1 – 3/4″ offset @ 8-1/ 2″ x 8- 1/2″ 4 – 2×2 @ 23-1/2″ – both ends cut 10 degrees from square, measure long point to short point, ends are parallel 4 – 2×2 @ 9-5/8″ – two- both ends cut at 45 degrees, ends NOT equal, measurements from highest point to highest point 1 – 12″ round (we cut ours from 1×12 3 /4″ pieces of plywood glued to be 1-1″ thick /2″ – these are also available on the shelf
Please read the entire plan and all comments before starting this project. We also recommend checking out the Getting Started section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and wisely. Work on a clean, flat surface free of stains or debris. Always use a straight board. Check the box after each delivery. Always drill the holes before screwing them. Use glue with finished nails for a stronger hold. Remove excess glue from bare wood for stained projects, as dry glue won't stain. Stay safe, have fun and get help when you need it. Good luck!

Take a 3/4″ deep circular saw blade and cut the 2×2 cross braces as shown above, cutting the long side of one and the short side of the other. Glue (do not screw or nail) both pieces.
Make the stool using 1-1/2″ pocket hole and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws or countersunk wood screws (2-1/2″ long will also work).
Secure the spikes to the outer leg with 2-1/2″ countersunk screws from the outside. You only need one screw per joint. Use glue.

Fill all the holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional layers of wood filler as needed. When the wood filler is completely dry, sand the project down toward the grain of the wood with 120-grit sandpaper. Vacuum sand project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue from the work surface as well. Clean the project with a damp cloth.
It is always recommended to use a test coat on a hidden area or piece of scrap to ensure color consistency and adhesion. Use a wood primer or conditioner if necessary. Have you ever wanted to make a bar stool? Maybe for your home or shop. This is a very easy DIY bar stool that anyone can make. You can put together a set of 4 of these in a few hours. There are many options and variations for this bar stool, so don't be afraid to make it your own. You don't need a shop full of tools to do this. I used my table seen in the video, but you can do this with a compound miter saw and a pocket hole jig. If you don't have a pocket hole mask, I recommend getting one. They are very useful for making DIY projects easy. If you think you will use it a lot (you probably will) then I recommend you get one like I did. They also make a cheaper version with clamps (affiliate link).

This step is optional. In the video you see I tapered the top of my top rail to 7°. This is so that the top of my top rail is level with the bottom of the seat. If you don't have a table saw or don't want to do this step, that's okay. You can only align the top outer edge of the top rail
