My project for this month’s theme is a DIY Living Edge wooden coffee table with amazing metal hairpin legs. The time has finally come to retire my $20 Ikea desk. I intended to fix it for a short time until I found someone I couldn’t live without. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find a coffee table that matches the table of my dreams.

I’ve seen Live Edge coffee tables before, but wasn’t sure I could find a good slab of wood locally, let alone replicate the perfect finish. My favorite is the hand rub style. I randomly thought I’d check out this amazing urban wood store in St Pete that some friends have been visiting. I use my Kreg gauge to measure the thickness of my wood panel and easily adjust it to match the height of my table saw blade. Big thanks to Gail from My Repurposed Life for sharing this useful tool for her project. This little measuring tool has become one of my favorites and I use it all the time, even for non-construction projects.

Sand the wood panel of the coffee table as needed. I started my random circuit with 120 grit sandpaper and worked my way up to 22o grit. Follow the grain of wood like sand. Always protect yourself when sanding. Wear your safety glasses and use a mask when sanding.

I used my HomeRight Finish Max Pro spray paint to remove all the sanding from the cracks and hollows before wiping down the entire wood panel with a thick cloth.

I used modified water-based poly in my Live Edge DIY coffee table project. Dip the top quarter of the brush into the water and clean around the edge of the container. Then dip the brush into the poly and gently wipe the edges so the brush doesn’t run. Apply a thin coat following the grain of the wood to the top and sides. Allow to dry for 2 to 4 hours.

Place the wooden board upside down on a soft blanket and attach the legs. I use my Kreg tool to easily mark the position of the hairpin legs.

Drill pilot holes for the screws. I marked my pilot hole with tape to make sure I didn’t dig too deep.
