Single Coat Polyurethane Finish – For our other two tables, we decided to finish them with clear polyurethane.
Place your pieces of wood, wood glue and clamps on a flat work surface. Apply a line of glue to one side of the 18×18″ plywood and lay the 18×6″ piece horizontally, holding it until the glue sets. Repeat this process parallel to the end of the other 18×6″ piece. Next, add a line of glue over the two 18×6″ pieces and place the second 18×18″ piece on top. Attach clamps to the two 18×18″ pieces. , ensuring that both sides are equal, so they can dry directly.

Let the wood glue dry for a few hours or overnight with the clamps on. If you plan to place heavy items on your table, add head nails to the joints to add strength to your table. After installing the finished nails, cover the nail holes with a natural wood stain and finish using fine sandpaper to smooth the stain after it dries.
Once the pieces have dried securely together, remove the clamps and apply a thin coat of polyurethane or paint of your choice. Polyurethane is a clear sealant. Not only does it add a nice subtle sheen (you can use a satin or matte finish if you like), but it also brings out the natural grain of the wood. If you are using paint, you should let the first coat dry and add a second coat for an opaque finish. Allow the paint or polyurethane to dry completely before proceeding to step 3.
