How To Build A Drafting Table – I am a poor student and currently unemployed. I want to do a ton of painting over the summer, but I don’t have a suitable place to work. My solution? Fits within a reasonable price range. But yours could be a few bucks because I had a bunch of stuff I thought I could use, but it’s all optional.

How To Build A Drafting Table
Well, including the random bits I found, the total came to $52.77 (tax included). A trip to Home Depot made things easy.
Wellington Drafting Table
Mine was about 3’x4′. You can get it at Home Depot for 50 cents per cut after the first two. No big deal if you don’t have a circular saw. In the tutorial I linked in the previous step, he uses empty doors. I went with MDF because the price was a bit high for me. If you don’t need extra MDF, you can get a small board for a small table.
Update: MDF wood was a terrible choice. After the drink is placed on the edge of the table, the condensation sinks into the wood and raises its surface. Now I have buns and rings. Also, it’s really heavy.
I got a pair of small rings to fit the 3/4 inch MDF. (see second photo)

It took the longest time to find these and no one knew what I was talking about. I have enough faith in them. They require little assembly and are straight forward.
The hinge gives you 3/8″ of space between the table and the painting surface. You need all of the 3/8″ to keep the surface level as needed. I found an old CD with a small block, so I cut some for the table.
I found this 2’x3′ sheet in my basement, it’s not the *ideal* size, but I thought it would work fine for it.

I don’t know what these are called, but put them on the legs of the furniture so you don’t scratch the floor. I put them on just to be safe. You can also place them in 3/8 inch increments so they don’t hit the painting surface too hard.
I don’t have a ton of space in my room right now, so I went with a smaller desk from Blacksheep. I have a 28″x36″ drawing area (with 4″ corners) and a 25″x49″ desk – I have 6.5″ shelves on each side (actually 7″).
So if you have a panel at Home Depot, whether you have a circular saw or not, you have to cut it there. Get 25″ wide pieces for the table and 28″ for the drawing surface. The third cut is to make the 28″ long piece 36″ wide.

It’s straight forward from here. Take your 3/8″ block and place it below the surface of the paint and lay the table flat. Flatten the table on the surface of the paint so that you are 3″ long. Center the hinges and remove evenly to the bottom of the drawing surface – I have about 14 inches between my hinges.
Also, make sure that the small part of the ring is attached to the table and not to the picture.
Be sure to fold the legs before placing on the table. I stopped doing this on the first couple of legs, I think they came out a little uneven. >>

Anyway. Locate the leg dead center, mark the hole and drill. Be careful not to go over the table. Cut the base and move to the second set. These are a little tricky because you want to fold them into the center of the table. I pushed them off center, marked the holes, then drilled and bolted. Do the same with the second leg.
With both legs connected, open them and turn the table. Make sure everything is straight and level.
Now just connect the 3/8 inch riser and plexiglass…

Align the riser with the corner of the face of the picture and glue it to the table. I have one in every corner. After they dry, you can touch them with an anti-friction pad (or something similar, like a damp cloth) to soften the surface of the scratches.
I haven’t glued the plexiglass yet because I wanted to draw something on the image and have some friends doodle. This is a good place to put a reference page like Human Anatomy.
I haven’t fixed it yet because I’m thinking of ways to mount them so they don’t get in the way like the ones I use on my laptop desk.

I spent very little time creating it considering how much I use it. If you decide to make one, you can make it as big as you want and mount it however you like (like a pencil cup holder). Know if you catch lemme. 🙂 I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a small sketching desk because the adjustable angle seems so handy for various things like drawing, reading, writing, keyboard/mouse work, etc. First I put the rack on my knees and experimented with adjusting the knee joint to get the angle I wanted. This is a fully functional prototype, but it may not be very comfortable. 🙂 After poking around a bit, I couldn’t find a sketch table that I really liked because the drawing surface was much larger than what I was looking for. I said, “Okay, okay, I’ll make one myself!” I thought, took a sheet of paper and started making models. After drawing several different versions, I finally found one that I liked:
You can adjust the angle quickly and easily. The conical surface is fixed in the center by a simple iron rod, so that only one rod needs to be moved to change the angle. (See the third image to see how this works.)
The angled surface is very stable (..for regular use; but I wouldn’t try to sit on it.)

It looks good because the screws are not visible. I also used leftover laminate flooring to make a corner surface so I knew it would at least fit my floor. 🙂 (Also, it can take the same beating as my floor, like pouring.)
I just used leftover materials I had lying around the house, so it didn’t cost me a dime. There is nothing fancy there: some wood, wood glue, screws and a hammer.
I used only simple tools to make the table: a measuring tape, a saw, a hammer, a cutter and a chisel are all you need.
Modern Drafting Tables
This table is for each complex picture; The only feature I wanted was the adjustable angle, which is the only feature it has. However, you can easily modify the design to add additional features such as upper drawers, corner channels or an adjustable desk height.
I won’t bore you with measurements, let the pictures do more of the talking. (You probably won’t be using exact measurements anyway. And *gasp* we’re using the metric system here. 🙂 )
In any case, I’ve attached a drawing table sketch template in case you need specific measurements. (See it at the bottom of this page.) All the different parts of the table are modeled separately so you can easily take it apart and use SketchUp’s tape measure.
Diy Hardwood Drafting (drawing) Table
The title of this tutorial says I’m using “Basic Tools”. However, if you have some advanced equipment, like a drill press and a table saw, I’m sure you can find more time and accuracy.
