How To Build Epoxy Table – As a woodcarver, I have an ever-growing list of projects I want to build at some point in my career…and at the top of that list is a resin river table. While making resin river tables over and over again, one thing I have noticed is that most of these projects are made in large workshops with industrial machinery. So I decided to make one using power tools and supplies found at my local home improvement store. At least, I’ve teamed up and worked with my amazing friends at Burnzomatic to help make this happen!
Here’s the thing… you don’t need an industrial-sized, fully equipped workshop to make cool stuff. Actually, I originally wanted to do this project using three power tools (a circular saw, a drill, and a sander), but I made a mistake and ended up using a hand sander which works just as well. But, if you can prevent the resin from seeping under your slabs, you can avoid using three power tools for this project altogether!

I added black pigment to make the river black. You can choose any pigment!

14. Then I realized that my slabs were flat and I poured epoxy deep into the river holes where there were cracks. Follow the directions on the resin container for how much to pour at a time. I was ambitious and ran out of resin when I recovered, so be careful!
15. After casting the resin, I used a Bernzomatic B4500 heat shrink torch on the large surface areas to remove as many bubbles as possible from the resin. This is important because I don’t want the resin to cure with bubbles.
I then looked at the pour and sometimes had to use a Burnzomatic ST2200 torch at the hobby and at home to remove the occasional bubble.

16. My resin was low so I had to go back to the project the next day and repeat steps 13 – 15 until I was happy with the pour depth.
17. After allowing the resin to react with the product I used, I removed the mold from the plates.
18. At this point I noticed that the bottom of the board had a big leak so I used a powerful hand sander to remove most of the resin.

19. I then used a sander to smooth the entire table. I started with a 120 grit sander and worked my way up to 400 grit before finishing the table.
I still can’t believe I made this table using tools I found at the home improvement store! It looks like it came from an official woodworking shop!

The choice of wood is a very important factor in making a good epoxy river table. It is better to buy expensive natural wood for pictures. It is better to make a beautiful and long-lasting table than cheap and low-quality furniture that breaks quickly.
For epoxy resin river tables, you should choose a wood board or log board (about 1.5 – 1.7 inches thick). If the wood has a natural grain, the look of your project will be excellent. There are a variety of stores where you can get untreated wood from a wood dealer, furniture maker, carpenter, or online. You can buy two good wooden boards at a DIY store with a slight curve on one end and cut them into the shape you want. Do not forget that the wood must be 100% dry before you start working with wooden boards.
Note: It is better to invest more in things. If you want to make yourself a beautiful wooden table, you will spend a lot of time and energy. It is recommended to buy good and high quality wood from trusted woodworkers or stores.

Epoxy resin is a very hard substance, when these parts are mixed – resin and hardener – a chemical reaction occurs, turning it from a liquid mixture into a solid. Before working with resin, suitable working conditions must be created. Temperature, humidity and cooling are factors in the success of your project. Hot temperatures can affect the curing time of the resin – it dries quickly. Since the resin is sensitive to water rehydration, it is important to know the working temperature. Optimum processing temperature is 23-30C or 70-85F Celsius. Cold temperatures below 20 degrees or below 68 degrees will cause the mixture to become thicker and fuller.
If you store your resin kit in a cool place, small, unsightly bubbles will quickly form in the resin. These small bubbles are not easily removed, a propane torch or hot air dryer is a bubble free solution.
A dust-free, dry and well-ventilated meeting space is essential to the success of your project. As the resin begins to dry, fine dust can form.

Bark, large holes, rotten spots or other remaining bark should be removed completely. You want your table to be as clean as possible with no dry, soft or rotten wood. Smooth the edge with sand or by hand with a simple tool – chisel or hammer.
Clean the slabs with a stainless steel wheel, which removes all the softwood and preserves the hardwood. This will allow the epoxy to bond better with the wood later.

For larger areas, use an eccentric sander or an orbital sander. Start with 80 grit and work your way up to 220 grit. Remove all dust after each use. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned from all remaining dust. Vacuum and finish with a microfiber cloth to remove all dust.
All uneven areas and porous cracks must be filled with epoxy resin. They can be filled with non-pigmented crystal clear epoxy resin or colored resin. Cover the edges with strong and durable adhesive tape to smooth out any unevenness in hard-to-reach areas. This stops the resin from going over the edges.
We always recommend sealing the edges as soon as the resin hardens. This prevents any dirt from the paint mixture from getting into the wood. When the crack is completely healed, seal all the wood with clear resin. It freely covers the entire surface of the tree, including the top. This small particle prevents the gasification of the wood. After sealing, dry for about 5-6 hours at 17°-24°C.

After the whole mixture is completely dry, a little roughen inside the edges, and then they will join the cast resin. It is easy to handle with sandpaper, epoxy bonds well with edges. Use a silicone glue brush or a fiber brush. Just apply it to the edges that hold the resin.
