Andover Mills™ Marland Tufted Parsons Chair & Reviews

I thought this day would NEVER come. If ever there was a post where I wanted to roll wheels in my backyard and reveal the “after” of a challenging restyling, this would be it.

I tend to bite off more than I can chew. I see the tinker project above, my wheels start spinning with ideas on how to make it into something awesome, I hit a big roadblock, I realize that my dreams often exceed my abilities, and I end up pushing it all the road – will be piled up in my garage never to be seen in the light of day again. (Am I alone in this? Please tell me you have a lot of when-I-am-nervous too).

But all of you. Oh my gosh, I’m so happy to show you that my skills have finally caught up with my wild DIY-fueled imagination…at least this time. So I’ll save you the time to scroll to the bottom of this post to see the final reveal:

Just to tell you where this big undertaking began, here’s what it looked like before I, a novice upholsterer, got my hands on it.

When I started envisioning what I wanted in our still very bare dining room, I kept coming back to the same criteria for dining room chairs: lightweight linen/canvas, striking studded finish, and interesting weathered oak legs.

But there was a small problem. God, there was no way my single income stay at home mom family was going to pay $2400 for a set of 6 chairs. So I passed out and daydreamed until I stumbled across these babies on Craigslist for $20. (Which was back in March and then I sat in my garage repeatedly trying and failing at this project).

They needed some love and a good update and were nothing like my inspirations. But they had good bones. I just couldn’t get away from them. So my wonderful father, who has been in the furniture business for over 30 years, took me on a trip to pick them up.

Not only were they well boned, but they were made by American Drew, a very high quality company, and they were incredibly strong. A huge plus!

Fortunately, I already had plenty of supplies on hand in my workshop and was able to borrow a stapler. In the end I only had to pay for nail tips, cloth, spray glue, cardboard and foam for the egg cartons.

Even if you don’t have much stock, it’s still cheap. My entire set of 6 chairs together cost significantly less than 1 Pottery Barn chair.

Since I wanted to upholster the entire back of the chair, I knew the curves would be difficult. So Robert and I cut the ends off first.

From there, my father-in-law, a master carpenter, gave us some pointers, so we decided to cut straight edges marked with a spirit level.

After the paint dried, I used a sponge brush to apply a coat of stain. I let the stain sit for about 10 minutes before wiping it off with a cloth and working in sections.

I was left with this rich wood tone with just enough gray peeking through to give it that old look. The texture of the wood grain on these chairs is amazing!

We went ahead and traced the back of the chair onto a piece of cardboard with a pencil sharpener. (I promise I did a lot more than just stand there and photograph Robert.)

And it was ready for fabric! (We attached the burlap to the seat while the chairs dried beforehand.)

To decide how much linen we needed, we measured the width and height of the chair back and added 4 inches around it to be sure. Our chairs were 16″ x 28″ so we marked the fabric as 24″ x 36″ for the front.

To make the back panel of the chair we used a cardboard template and traced around it, leaving approx. 2 inches. Let’s leave these pieces of spine fabric aside for later.

When we started laying the front of the fabric, it took some time to work. We started by joining the lower center.

For the sides, I started by folding the bottom flap flat and placing it around the back of the chair.

This was definitely a two-man job. While we worked on putting the sides together, I stretched the fabric while Robert pulled the fabric tight around the sides and stapled so the front was smooth with no creases.

At the top I thanked my lucky stars for going for straight, sharp edges. We started on the side by folding the corners and trimming a little all the places that should be closest.

To make the back panel, I hot glued the edges of the cardboard cutout and pinched the fabric, starting at the bottom.

The edges of the panel and the joined edges of the chair back are well coated with contact cement.

After about 10 minutes of waiting, I pressed the panel against the back of my chair. I also applied hot glue under the edges.

Hey look! Upholstered chair! Not bad for someone who made all this up along the way. Next, I also pressed out wrinkles (this picture was a clear hint that she needed it).
