How To Build An Adirondack Chair
Cut the legs (A), brackets (B), and angle brackets (C) from the 1 x 6 cedar boards to the required length (design diagram, cutting list, and diagram). GoodToKnow cedar wood often has one smooth and one rough surface. When assembling the seat, sand all surfaces of each board with 100-grit sandpaper—sand just enough to remove the rough parts. Turn the rough surface on the inside of the seat so that the edge of your fingerboard is flat.
Assemble the two side frames with exterior glue and 2-inch screws (design diagram, Figure 1). Drill pilot holes and countersinks at each screw location to prevent wood splitting; Tighten the screws to assemble the frames.
For the angle brackets, cut a 5-degree angle at one end of the angle brackets (design diagram, Figure 2). Corners can be cut with a miter saw, circular saw, or jig and ruler.

Place the cut end of the plank on the front leg, mark the exact length of board on the opposite leg and cut the pole to the final length. When cutting and installing the side frames and corner brackets, remember to create a mirror for the other side of the seat (design diagram, photo 1).
Place the frame on the work surface and install the bracket. The partition is closed from the outside of the frame with the thickness of the board. (Use scraps to create an offset.) The bottom edge of the frame is 8 1/2 inches above the bottom bracket on the back of the seat. Attach the bracket with 2-inch screws; repeat to assemble the remaining side frame.
Cut the two seat rails (D), back (E), and brace (F) to the required length from the 1 x 6 board (design diagram, cutting list, and diagram). GoodToKnow How long do you stay on the board? A regular cedar 1 x 6 is usually thicker than pine or pressure-treated pine you find in the store. Cedar can be up to 7/8 inch thick, while others are usually closer to 3/4 inch. That 1/8 inch difference can add and subtract your measurements in a flash. If you build the seat with cedar for the frame and pine for the frame like we did, you won’t have to worry. However, if you decide to build your frame from pine or pressure-treated pine, you will need to make a few modifications. Cut pieces 1/4 inch longer than shown in the materials list for the seat rails (D), back (E), and rear end (F). This is due to the different thickness of the corner and the backlash on both sides of the seat. Add the 1/8 inch shown on each end of the rails to account for the changes (Design Diagram, Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 5).

Place the cutout on the top edge of one of the seat rails (D) (Design Diagram, Figure 3). Mark the points and connect the point shape. The blade creates a relaxing curve for the seat and back, making the seat more comfortable. Cut the broken pieces from the board with a piece.
Cut in first and second seat rails (D) and rear end (F); cut the clips and attach the first seat rail to the inside of the front legs (A) with glue and screws (design diagram, photo 1). When installing these parts, drive 1/4 inch screws through the seat to reduce the number of visible screws.
Attach the back rail (E) (design diagram, Figure 1) in the same way as you attached the front seat rail (D).

Place the remaining seat rail between the angle brackets and place it 14 inches behind the front seat rail (Design Diagram, Figure 4). Attach the angle brackets with 2-inch screws.
Cut the arm (G) to the required length and attach it to the top of the lower frame (B) with glue and screws (design diagram, photo 4). The arms hang 5 1/2 inches (1 x 6 wide) over the back legs. Tighten the screws from the bottom – pass them through the sub-floor frames so that the screws are not visible on the end seat.
