Workshop Moderne Reclaimed Wood Dining Table
I know the reason for the high price is no doubt the reclaimed pine planks and metal legs. So I started thinking about how I could use more common materials for a less expensive look. We recently built a 2×8 farmhouse table for my mom with great success. I think with a combination of 2x8s, 4x4s and 2x4s we can get similar results to this table. That’s what we do!
We cut the 2 x 8 pieces into 4 pieces of 48″. We then glued and clamped the boards and cut them to 32″ with two 2×4’s. We’ve had this question before, do we get table top cracking using this method (since there’s not much room to expand and contract) – short answer is we haven’t experienced it even though we have a 5 year old table cracking. done by this method. Even when we do, we love rustic furniture. If you’re comfortable with biscuit woodworking, go ahead and replace this step, but to keep this tutorial “beginner friendly” we’ll stick with our method… 😉
Mack (my husband) then had a great idea to add the illusion of thickness by wrapping the tabletop in 2x4s. This will give the reclaimed wood planks a similar look, and will also effectively hide where we added the legs! We cut the corners and ran the 2x4s through the table saw to keep them straight. We then glued, clamped and taped the 2x4s to the tabletop to make sure they were straight.

We opted to use 4×4’s cut to 17″ “faux metal” legs. We joined them at the top with a 3.5″ x 26″ piece of scrap plywood. Next we cut two 2×4’s to 19″ and attached them to the 4.5″ floor. We secured them with long, rustic black screws, and nailed them on the other side at an angle to twist.
Since the wood is very rough, I sanded all the parts with 60 grit. Then return to 120 for a silky smooth finish. We applied two coats of Minwax Dark Walnut Stain according to the manufacturer’s directions. After drying, we applied two coats of polyurethane over the satin.
On the legs we used a multipurpose polymer stain called Polyshades in Ebony. It has great coverage and only two coats!

After the requisite drying time, Mack built the tabletop and secured the legs to the table with basic wood screws. Then I had a lot of fun! It’s so nice to have a coffee table, especially one that can withstand the wear and tear that our kids are sure to wear. All in all, this is a quick and easy project that fits the style of the room perfectly. Of course, the fact that they’re only $50 doesn’t hurt either!

We also didn’t stain the piece – it’s actually a reclaimed wood stain. I know, my heart was also shocked!
I wanted something really over the top, but in all the right ways. You can certainly make it out of pine, but you won’t get the same charm as you would with old or reclaimed wood.

After discovering the coolest reclaimed wood store in Chicago, Doug and I decided to make furniture for our apartment. We chose to start with the TV cabinet as we were both relatively new to woodworking and thought it would be easy to do. The table was easy to make once the wood was measured and cut and I absolutely love how this piece turned out.
The reclaimed wood we chose for the table was salvaged from a house in Detroit, which is obviously a big fan of ours since that’s our hometown. I just love furniture with stories, what about you?

Italian Style Reclaimed Wood Trestle Dining Table
Step 1. To make a table top, line up two pieces of salvaged wood, making sure the bottom is facing you. Screw on the retaining plates (we used 3 in total).
Step 2. Screw on the top plate at each corner. These are used to tighten the table legs so that the table stands upright.
Step 4. Measure where you will place the shelf. The top of our table stand is 11 inches off the ground. Match your small pieces of wood (we used scraps from a salvaged lumber store) to your dimensions and screw them down.
How To Build A Coffee Table From Reclaimed Wood
Step 6. Place the shelf planks on top of the mounting blocks. We didn’t nail, screw or glue our shelf in case we wanted to remove it in the future, it’s still very secure.

Creating a rustic coffee table from reclaimed wood is so much fun. This is a great opportunity to use scrap wood or go to a salvaged lumber store and buy different parts. This project is all about creativity and creating a model that is a true work of art.

To make the base, I put together reclaimed mahogany with simple glue and staples. All parts are 1x2s except for the legs where I added a small piece of 1×1 to make the legs square.
I cut a 1×2 piece of mahogany to make the legs 18 inches long. To make each leg, I folded the 1×1 into a 1×2, then crochet that piece onto the 1×2 piece to make each leg. I cut the rails from the same piece of wood 28″ on the long side and 18″ on the short side, then nailed and glued them to the legs to make the base.
On top of that, I have collected a whole bunch of different reclaimed woods. Most of them are about 3/4″ thick, so I plan to make them all about 5/8″ thick. I then cut them into 1 1/2″ wide strips on the table saw.
