During the big spring break, I cut and graveled the 35-step wooden garden steps, created a small garden pond and landscape, a natural wood area and a wild bee garden.
In this second stanza I was less ambitious. I am making two kentucky cane chairs and a small coffee table.
This piece of furniture will give the carers a luxurious view of the beehive and wildflower area which is halfway across the steep rear garden. It is on a terrace next to a small game pond.

It should come as no surprise that getting the right size of wood is almost impossible when doing locksmithing. I don’t have a hardware designer and I can’t (for whatever reason) set up the garage to use my table to rip the material.
The final stick I ended up with was 46mm x 34mm – so 1mm out! Almost enough guesswork!
The arrival timber is 3m or 2.4m long and the first thing I did was to cut the length of each space to round the four corners.

Then I followed the chart above and figured out how to cut all the pieces to the minimum length. After drawing on several sheets of paper, a cutting plan is drawn up and the length of each bar drawn. As I measure each component, I lightly write on each piece that is from the table above. Using a square cutter to draw a square cut line in both width and depth, a Japanese drawing was used to get the thinnest and most accurate cut.
The location of the various boreholes on each piece of work is critical to the success of the project. Get them out of alignment and the seals (or steel bars if you choose them) will not move properly through the pieces. Measurements are on the diagram below.
I started with a drill and a drill, but actually found it still needed time to set up, so got rid of the stuff! After drilling the fourth hole, I opted to do it by hand, using a block of wood under each of the wood clamps on my back seat. This block is important not only to withstand bare wood, but also to prevent cracking during drilling.

Dredging – lots of sand. My little sander literally blew up. The explosion and blue light shook my hand, and the circuit breaker kicked through the garage door. The Bosch sander is small, ten years old and used on many Irons at the same time!
It’s a good thing I live less than a mile from Screwfix! After 80 grit, 120 grit and then a quick sanding with 240 grit, I sanded around the edges and then the end of each piece to remove the sharp corner edges. I might be excited about dredging!
Each piece was carefully cleaned with white spirit to remove any remaining sand dust and left to dry for 24 hours.

At this point I decided a dry run was needed. No, I don’t know why, but I sorted it out thinking that if I drilled the wrong hole and didn’t put things together, it would be better to know now after things are messed up.
I’ll go into more detail on how to do this in the next post, but suffice it to say I was pleasantly surprised. I think this is the first time that something changed in a straight line and without any mistakes. Miracles will never end. This is my first attempt at a Kentucky Stick Chair and I really enjoyed it. There were one or two holes that I drilled, one or two holes filled with natural wood elements. Probably because my drill bit wasn’t sharp enough and because I didn’t support the base of the drill bit enough.

Once you have all the pieces assembled and glued together, do a dry build to make sure everything is in place before you start staining.
Putting all the pieces together sounds complicated, but it’s not. It just requires a bit of organized thinking, slow pace and regular self-monitoring.
Assemble the different parts as above. I now use 12mm sisal instead of wire rods. I cut the ends about 5cm deep with electrical tape, which makes it easier to insert and pull through the holes. To do this you need a flat surface, either a large work chair or a clean mat protected by untreated wood with an old mattress.
