How To Build An Outdoor Table Top – These plans are instructions for building a simple do-it-yourself cedar table. Using cedar, this outdoor table will age beautifully. This is the first project I designed entirely in Sketchup before designing. I will post the actual construction and CAD drawings in Sketchup.

How To Build An Outdoor Table Top
Start with a premium design. Specifically, start with the circular parts. I decided to make this table with a border around it, but Pottery Barn Chatham uses simple joins with lines around it. Both look good, so do whatever you want. The actual dimensions I chose for the table hinge design are slightly larger than shown.

The table top is made from 5/4×6 cedar that is cut to 5″ wide to get the right angles. The overall length of this table is 6′ tall and 3″ wide. Fasten these pieces together with pocket screws. square before continuing.
Once the top edge of the table is in place, cut the rest of the top inner boards. These boards will be 28.5″ long and you will need 10. They are also made from 5/4×6 cedar that has been cut 5″ wide to give square sharp edges. Since you will be cutting 10 of these and you want them to be the same length, it helps to have your miter saw or table saw mounted on the workbench. Make sure there is a ¼” gap between each board
Once the board is ready, start working on the ice. This will make the table top sturdy. The rafter is made of cedar 1x4s and sits under the round planks of the table top. This will give 2.125″ of table top from bottom.
A Simple Modern Outdoor Table

Now you can cut the legs and feet. The legs are cut from a cedar 4×4, each should be 29″ They are only there to strengthen the legs. Screw these legs to the back wing so the screws are hidden. Fit the tail well on each leg before gluing and taping it in place .
In the last step, connect the legs. I decided to attach the legs to 5″ long stainless steel brackets. I did this to remove the legs from the table for winter storage.
How To Build A Picnic Table
Since this table is made of cedar, it can be used outdoors for many years without damage. Or, you can choose to use a floor finish product such as Sikkens Cetol for added protection.
Materials, not including stain and filter, should cost about $150 (before tax) to build this cedar table. This can easily be made in 1 day, and compared to buying a Pottery Barn Chatham stable table for $550, this is a bargain! Here’s a quick price and shopping list

Use glue to protect your joints and consider painting or staining individual parts before assembly. This makes the color application flawless. Round Poly Resin Outdoor Dining Table
Cut out the legs and top/bottom ends. With the Kreg template set on 1-1/2″ material, drill a pocket through the two top/bottom sides. Assemble as shown using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket screws. Turn the pocket holes to the inside of the table so they are hidden during table assembly. This step should be completed twice.
Cut the end pieces into slats. With the Kreg template attached to the 3/4″ material, attach a pocket to both ends of the end slats. Position the end slats where they overlap the outside of the legs and are spaced 1/4″ apart. Mount using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket screws.
Cut the front/back top/bottom. With the Kreg template set on 1-1/2″ stock, drill pockets in both the front top and back top/bottom. Assemble as shown using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket screws. Turn the pocket holes to the inside to stay hidden during a meeting at the table.

Cut out the front/back material. With the Kreg template attached to the 3/4″ material, make pocket holes on both sides of the front/back. Place the front/back where they are flush with the outside edge of the legs and 1/4″ apart from each other. Mount using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket screws.
Cut holes for the bottom of the table. With the Kreg jig set on the 3/4″ stock, drill a pocket on each side of the table bottom. Place the table bottom where it hits the top front/bottom back. Assemble with glue and 1-1/4″ pocket screws
Cut out the bottom support pieces. Place the support under the table as shown and secure it in place with glue and 2-1/2″ wood screws – start with the screws on the inside of the table, under the table and in the table support.
