How To Make A Diy Hammock Chair – Many of my projects are inspired by my children and born out of the need to provide them with some sort of activity that will teach them independence or stimulate their creativity. This DIY hanging chair is one of them.
I made this hanging chair especially for my older son who loves to read and often needs some quiet space away from his chatty older sister. Our front porch is often a refuge from the hustle and bustle of our family of five and the perfect place to hang out (literally) and read a book.
How To Make A Diy Hammock Chair
Although I made this hanging chair for my kids, it can be used by adults as well. The filament I use is strong enough to hold 200 lbs. As such, it can take a hard pounding from two older children, but most hardware stores stock it to ensure that this lounger can handle more weight.
Diy Hanging Macrame Chair — The Sorry Girls
Supplies: -1 1/4″ x 3′ oak dowels (oak is considered safer than poplar to support weight. Also, I cut my dowels to 3′)
Step 1: Fold two yards of canvas in half and lay flat on the left as shown. Measure approximately 7 inches from the top right edge and mark it.
I cut mine to about 12 inches, which was a little high, so I recommend 7 inches. Using a ruler or ruler, draw a line from the top mark to the bottom right corner, then cut the two pieces. Open your canvas.

Step Two: Fold the top edge down 1/2 inch and iron. Then fold it again 1/2 inch and iron. Pin and sew the folded bottom as shown above. Repeat for the long bottom edge.
Step 3: Turn the canvas 90 degrees to the left so that the longest side is on the right. You will create a pocket to slide the cord through on each side.
Fold each corner about 1 1/2 inches and iron flat. Then fold the unhemmed top edge over 1/2 inch and iron.

Step Five: Sew two lines along the bottom folded edge as shown. Reinforce the beginning and end with a back stitch. Repeat on the other side.
Step Six: Make and drill a 2″ and 4″ mark on each end of the dowel. If desired, sand rough edges and spots. I decided to let myself be natural.
Step Seven: Place your canvas on a large piece of cardboard and draw your design on one side. Let it dry and then paint the pattern on the other side (optional). If you’re using a printed fabric, make sure it’s an upholstery weight or outdoor fabric for strength.

Step 8: Tie a knot in one end of the 16-foot piece of rope, leaving the tail about 3 inches long. Melt the ends so they don’t fall apart. Screw the canvas seat through the outer hole of the oak stud, from the wide corner at the side to the narrow corner at the top.
Then tie a knot about 3 feet from the first knot and thread it into the oak dowel. Continue threading it through the 4 inch hole on the other side and measure 3 feet from the loose end and tie a loose knot.
Pull it through the other fabric pocket, then tie through the back hole and a 3 inch tail. If your sides are uneven, adjust the knots before tightening them.

Step 9: Find the center of the rope above the dowel and tie a knot leaving about 8″-10″ of space above. Attach the spring connector, then the quick connector, and finally hang it on a hook that attaches tightly to a ceiling beam or large tree branch.
Be sure to adjust all the knobs to make sure the seat sits comfortably. Wait for the test before sitting on it to make sure everything is secure.
A soft round cushion can be added to the bottom of the seat for extra cushioning for smaller occupants. The height can be adjusted according to the height of the ceiling.

Our porch ceiling is lower than the inside of our house, so you may want to cut the rope 2′-4′ long or cut the rope 2′-4′ long, depending on the height of the ceiling.
