The Right Way To Install A Ceiling Fan
In this ceiling fan connection diagram, the blue wire on the ceiling fan is connected to the LOAD side of the wall switch so it controls the fan light. The fan’s black wire plugs into the LINE, allowing a circuit switch on the fan to control the fan motor independently of the wall switch.

It’s not uncommon to use the white wire as the hot wire or LINE on a switch. However, the white wire must be re-identified with a different color from white, gray or green. I have rolls of duct tape of different colors that I use for identification. Some electricians will use a permanent marker to change the color of the wire.

The fan and light are controlled by the same wall switch, but the wall switch can be left on and the fan and light can be controlled separately using a chain switch.
A remote control box can be added to this ceiling fan. Just keep the wall switch in the on position.
If you don’t need a remote control, but prefer to have all of your fan control options in the location of a wall switch, you should look for a wall-mounted ceiling fan that will run through the existing cables. In some cases, it’s just a wall-mounted remote control like a normal wall switch.

How To Install Or Hang A Ceiling Fan
The above shows the method used to provide a neutral conductor in the junction box of the power supply in a rated ceiling fan box. The fan’s blue wire connects to the red LOAD wire from the wall switch. The black wire of the fan is connected to LINE. The wall switch controls the ceiling fan lighting and the chain switch controls the fan motor separately from the wall switch.
By having hot and neutral sections in the junction box, it can be connected for other purposes such as an electrical outlet. The diagram above shows the red LOAD wire from the wall switch connected to the blue wire of the ceiling fan to control the light. The fan motor is controlled independently of the wall switch using a chain switch on the fan because the fan’s black wire is directly connected to the LINE.

A three-wire cable is required to carry the LINE and neutral along with the LOAD conductors to the ceiling box. The wiring diagram above shows the blue wire connection for the lighting and the black wire for the fan motor. Wall switches control the lighting and fan motors are controlled by the built-in chain switches, independent of the wall switches.

A ceiling fan box 2 1/8″ deep should be used to mount the ceiling fan higher. Too many wires for a standard 1 1/2″ deep electrical box. The remote control receiver can be connected to most ceiling fans. Before buying a remote control, read the remote control manufacturer’s instructions. While ceiling fan remote control is very convenient, it is the cause of most of the calls I receive from customers about fans stopping working. The remote control for the fan has failed, or the radio connection between the transmitter and receiver has been lost.
A broken transmitter/receiver connection is usually easy to fix, but each manufacturer seems to have their own way of doing this. Sometimes you need to turn off power to a circuit and then turn it back on and hold down a button on the transmitter for a few seconds to reconnect. Best to check with the remote manufacturer.
