How To Make A Macrame Chair Seat
I’ve been seeing a lot of macrame furniture lately. I love macrame and this macrame lawn chair is one of those DIY projects I’ve always wanted to try! Based on the improvement and organization of my space, I decided to upgrade some of the lawn chairs that I have seen so many summers. The chairs have a perfect metal frame and need a new webbing, making them candidates for a macrame lawn chair!

When I was looking for macrame pattern inspiration, I realized there was a huge lack of detailed instructions. So I decided to experiment and make my own style. I’ve teased you before so you don’t have to do the exhaustive search I did. You can download it here (for free) to get started with your macrame lawn chair!
To start your chair, you will need to place your rope tie on the floor inside the center of the chair. This is a simple thread placement for the entire sewing process. Starting at the bottom of the seat frame, fasten with a square knot, leaving 6″ of slack at the end. Remember that you will only fasten the straight parts of the seat frame, leaving the rounded corners.
Now move your strings under the center point and lift the strings. (see pictures below)

Then, attach the strap to the seat leg and pull it out. Push your hook into the loop you just made. Pull the string tight so the hook doesn’t come off. Also, make sure the loop is in the thickest part of the hook to make sure you can find your hook next time. Trust me, it will make your life a lot easier as you go along!
Return the strap, under the waist belt and to the front of the seat frame. Wrap around the loop and pull out the first two strands. As you did before, push the hook into the loop and place the flat side of the hook. Continue to pull hard on the loose bone.

I would recommend starting with a large chair frame from Amazon. Amazon has other options but they are smaller. Whether you’re an adult or your pet, go for it!
Good quality macrame cords can be hard to find locally so I recommend ordering online from Amazon or Etsy.
1. Optional: Prepare the seat frame if necessary. Start by removing the chipped paint and sand it down. One spray paint and element.

2. To make the macrame hammock, cut 16 pieces 16 feet long. You fold the rope in half and tie a knot, which shortens the length.
3. Using the rope folded in half, wrap it around the top of the seat cushion, pulling the ends into the loop to secure. Continue all the lines around the frame like this.
4. To create the pattern, you will use a square macrame knot. Cross the left strand in the middle and the bottom right with the first two strands (4 strands). Keep your finger on it.

5. Now you are doing the opposite. Take the right cord and tie it under the middle two cords from the left navel piercing.
6. To complete the knot, repeat steps 7 and 8 on the back. Cross the cord from the right center cord to the left cord. Take the left cord and carry it under the middle cord, through the clamp and over the right cord. Tighten the knot. Complete the row as follows.
7. In the next row, start with a double knot with the third string. Use two strands from the first group and two neighboring strands from the next group to make your next square knot.

8. Continue down. Once you have finished the macrame hammock, tie a square around the bottom frame of the chair. Trim the excess string.
9. With the extra string, gather all the pieces of hanging string and tie it off. Enjoy your new chair!

Unlike other macrame chairs you can find online, this one has deep “pockets” so you can dive in and protect yourself. The seat is 40 inches long and 32 inches wide, but you can increase the width by cutting additional cords. Make sure you end with even numbers (36, 38, 40, etc.).
When you build your hammock chair, the ropes will be thicker and there will be more of them.
Secure one end of the 36-inch rope to the right side of the folded rope with a ring. Fold 2 inches and bring the ends back around the ring.

Go 36 to 40 inches below the roll knot, depending on how high you want the seat to be.

Use it to tie a tight square knot. Work cards 1 and 4 and fill in 2 – 3.
You will attach the straps of the swing chair to either side of this knot.
Step 5: Move the two ends of the 4 strings to the right, the other two ends to the left without hanging. You can see it in the picture below.

Fold 6.5 yards of cord in half and place the 4 cards on the left side of the square knot.
Bring the ends of the 4 strands behind them and the loop that comes out, pull them towards you. This is an inverted lark’s head knot.
Pass the ends to the front and back of the cord. Lift up the cord you are working on when you download it.

Repeat step 5 for the remaining 6.5 yards of rope. 16 strings should be attached to each side of the SK in the middle of the swing seat.
Step 6: Tie the first row of alternating double crochets (ASK) with 6.5 yards of string. Start at string 1 and work your way up to string 64, tying the knots in an even row.
They just need to rest.
