I modified the original curves to make them lighter and nicer, and this version is shown in the image. For my new version I used Port Orford cedar, because the chair does not need finishing and can be left outside in the weather – rain or sun – and it will turn gray. I haven’t made a cushion for this chair yet, but it’s not too much work to do. For the cover, I use fabric – natural or synthetic – and man with kapok. Doubles as a life raft in case I fall off the dock.
Slip. Two curved frames flow together. When the seat is assembled, three transverse bars hold it in place without special hardware.

All you need for this project is a band saw (or jigsaw), a low angle planer, a drill and a radius. In terms of materials, you can’t go better than Story for a frame, as it combines light weight with flexible strength. Spruce is not good, because the wood must be stamped with several coats of marine varnish or painted for a really low maintenance finish. You can make a chair from teak or mahogany. Sometime it would be nice, but it would be more expensive and less portable because of the extra weight.
Easy to store. The frames slide together for easy transport and storage at the end of the season.
The slats are screwed to the frame with stainless steel or bronze screws. Leave the ends open or plug the holes with wooden plugs.

To get a large image, you need to glue several sheets of paper, and you will find small glitches – flat spots and sudden changes in curvature. Instead of building on your chair, take a flexible stick, shape and trace the curves with a marker. Boat builders often do this to create nice curves.
