Edited 2/9/2015 for an important update: This post was written about a table designed for the Janome 6600, an armless flatbed machine. It is very easy to cut a hole to install this machine. I have since found a large machine with a free arm and adjusted this table to fit. We used a method that simplified the hole needed to install the engine and we did great! A 2×4 support was then added under the table top near the hole. This placement is different for every table and quilter. It is important to find out how much of the table is real wood or ‘manufactured wood’ (plywood, chipboard, etc.).

Hubby says the hardest part was marking where to drill the hole for the knee lift! After hubby finished the building, I started searching. I should have painted more than I did, we had varnish ripples left under the first coat of paint. But the table was holding a picture board, so we were afraid to remove too much.
I then applied 3 coats of Davis brand, heavy duty enamel, urethane. I sanded each coat a bit where it was rough and where we had that varnish problem. The finish isn’t quite perfect, but it’s incredibly smooth.

My previous work space was done the same way, but it was a laminate counter installed in the style of a corner closet. This is not our first attempt at making a sewing machine table. A few years ago, I decided I needed a table for my sewing machine, the table top was flush with my sewing machine needle/throat plate. . . . At least it worked out pretty well. My machine has a knee lift which I like, but my machine shakes every time I use the knee lift. I got very used to putting my machine back in place after every three or four leg lifts and knee lifts. This was actually quite annoying. It was also a problem to hold my machine on top of the foam and therefore even the work surface.
I’ve been looking at sewing cabinets that include trim to even out the sewing space for my sewing machine, but WOW – at least $500 plus another $75 for custom fitting to fit my machine. There has to be an affordable solution.

When I make a bag, I usually have 2-3 different colors to match the bobbins I use. I change my hoops a lot when sewing one bag, so I was able to switch to my bobbins easily. Brian and I came up with a solution to easily change my bobbin without taking the sewing machine off the table. Brian cut a notch in the table apron and the shelf my machine sits on. Now I can easily change the bobbin!
