How To Cover A Chair With Fabric Without Sewing – It’s snowing this morning, so I have to cancel client meetings, but I have to eat frozen cereal and make chair covers in owl pajamas. It’s terrible (according to Tony Tiger)!!!
I wasn’t going to do a DIY project, but when I found leftover Thomas Paul fabric in my office, the light bulb went out (bing!). I have 2 chaplains’ chairs that I would professionally put in them, but holding the rest of the pieces and looking out the window at the snow, I decided to see if I could do it myself for fun. I’ve never done that.
How To Cover A Chair With Fabric Without Sewing
Important information – I can’t operate a sewing machine (this was one of my goals for 2011). This is a “highly creative” project (say, like a John Wayne project). I just use what I have at home. I documented it below. If you feel like it, try it! I’m sure there are a million variations on how to do this, but here’s mine:

Wrap the fabric over the chair. Play with the fabric to find the best way to make it work. Use pins to keep it in place so it works better.
Mine works best by cutting it in half, one to tuck in the seat, leaving the legs exposed; And one to wrap the front and back of the chair, leaving the sides exposed as I didn’t have enough fabric to cover them.
Trim the fabric to an extra 4 inches (or a little less if you don’t have enough fabric) on all sides (as shown in the photo above). I needed the extra inches to fold the sides of the seat back fabric (step three), glue the seat back and seat fabric together, tuck them into the seat (step four) and slide them under the seat (step five).

Iron the fabric (I like to sing a Roxette song when I do this – try “Oh A Little Dangerous”).
By using the fabric that will run over the back of the chair (not the fabric of the chair), you want to hide the trimmed edges along the sides of the chair by folding it down. I laid the fabric face down and using an extra four inches (or less if you don’t have enough fabric) folded the edges, ironed with a magic stitch to keep the fold. Make sure the folded edge of the fabric still covers the width of the edge of the chair as above.
I put the chair back fabric and the chair back fabric on the chair. I used stitching magic to glue the seat fabric to the seat back fabric; Then, to hide the seams, I tucked the seams into the seat as shown above.

Put the chair back and start pulling the fabric of the chair tight by tapping the small nails under the chair (a stapler also works). At the corners, pull and wrap the fabric as if you were wrapping a gift. * I noticed that when I was standing on a chair, I kept my nails straight when I tapped them.
I applied fabric glue to the back of the chair to attach it to the chair. Instead of fabric glue, you can use nail heads (like the front side in step seven).
Turn the front of the chair towards you. Add nail heads to the front of the chair back (you can also use them on the back instead of fabric glue in step six). I spaced them 3 inches apart, but use more if you like the look of the nail heads.

There are so many variations you can make with this project. You can use Velcro to hold the fabric underneath, no need for nail heads, you can use the fasteners on the sides to make it easier to put on and take off, etc.
Material. – I hope my steps are clear because I don’t have much time to write them. My daughter came home early because of the snow.
I’m working on a different priest’s chair I’ve been using using a different Thomas Paul remnant. I love how it looks on my kitchen counter. Can’t wait to see what the others look like!!

And after 6 months here it is! The chair was in pretty good shape apart from a few stains on the arms. When we chose the red color scheme for the room, I thought this chair would go well there, but I wanted to update it a bit… it’s a bit like an amphibian.
How To Make A Fabric Slip Cover For A Chair
I gathered fabric scraps and played with which pieces I wanted to use until I was happy with the layout.
I started with the back panel and trimmed the fabric, adding a little more around the edges. I probably left 8-12 inches on the sides and bottom and only about 2 inches along the top edge. I just folded the top edge and folded it with my fingers, then put some hot glue under the fold and tucked it under the rope. Believe it or not, hot glue works wonders on fabrics!
I left more fabric on the sides and bottom because I could tuck the pieces back (between the back and the side wings) and they stayed great. It really helps to use an old butter knife to force the fabric to slide under such tight edges. I don’t want the fabric to tear when someone sits on the chair, and with the extra weight I can slip it back in and it will stay in place.

To cover the sleeves, I did the same, folding under each protruding edge, carefully hot-gluing each edge, and tucking the threads as close as I could. When I reached the back cushion and the edge of the seat under the armpits, I tucked the excess fabric tightly into the slits.
I don’t have a photo of the part, but the yellow parts he was holding with his finger were attached with small pins from underneath. I pry it up with a screwdriver but leave it attached along the bottom (so the rounded part folds up like a flap). Then I made neat pleats along the bottom edge, brought the fabric back and glued it along the edge. I put the “lid” back together and pushed the pins back into place. The cut was a little loose, so I went back with more hot glue and pressed it down hard until it dried. perfect.
Back and shoulders… Everything between the back cushion and the side wings and the sleeves and underarms is just extra, tightly tucked-in material. So far I have never returned anything, it’s still nice and comfortable.

The herringbone strips are almost the same, cut to a rough size, then fold and glue all the edges. I stepped back a few inches under the pillow and stuck the rest along the wire. For the skirt, I roughly doubled the size around the seat and hemmed it along the bottom. Then I divided them, first pinning them in the corners and in the middle of each side.
Then I pulled the loose fabric between the pins and made an eye crease, again just below the rope. There is a hard surface under this part of the chair, so I used a clamp where I could fit it.
To cover the raw edge of the skirt, I added a fringe and ribbon, and thin strips of black and white ribbon balance the other side of the yarn.

I think this is a really good alternative if you have a chair that is in pretty good shape but just needs a refresh. Even though it currently has clothes strewn about it, your little one likes to sit here and read from time to time, and I think it’s another piece of art in the corner!
