How To Build A Wooden Rocking Chair – After moving into the house, April Wilkerson added a lot of space to her outdoor living space. The Texan DIYer has a chair for every occasion. He currently designs and manufactures Western Red Cedar Adirondack Chairs, Tall Adirondack Chairs, Two-Person Porch Swings, Single-Person Swings, and he recently added a rocking chair.
“It’s a very simple design and construction, but it’s sturdy and very comfortable,” he says of the classic rocking chair, which he created using one of his favorite building materials. “I chose western red cedar because it’s a strong natural material, but it’s also very light, allowing the finished chair to be easily lifted and moved.”

The parts are joined together with a waterproof glue specially formulated for wood and outdoor use. Make sure the two corner pieces are level, then tighten them before screwing.
“I repeated these steps to create the second generation and make sure it wasn’t like the first,” says Wilkerson.
Cut the board lengthwise. Then cut it into strips using a table saw. Then round off all the edges for a softer look.

“I loaded all the holes into my portable workbench, laid them out on the router table, and used a 1/2″ infinity bit on both long ends.”
Apply a small layer of glue to the underside of each panel at the two attachment points. Each panel is then screwed together with stainless steel screws.
“I started most of the back panel at the base and then worked my way back up from there,” he says, “I cut connectors to make them a quick liner.”

“I used two boards, cut them to different lengths, and then glued them together to make the knee sides,” says Wilkerson. “But if I had used thicker pieces of cedar, I would have carved half of it to make this joint.”
This piece is quite heavy, so when drawing it, tilt the pattern as much as possible to get as straight a grain as possible along the length of the roll. Make sure the bottom bend is undamaged and before attaching it to the legs, put all the pieces together and place them on the floor to test their ability to hang.

“In this area, I apply wood glue, and then I place the short legs with the long legs so everything is level,” Wilkerson said.

“At first I thought about making some blind pins to attach the arms to the legs, but the screws were exposed in the seat so I thought they would go together,” he said. Of course, it goes down here and puts them under the surface, giving them a nice smooth feel. Then I drilled the back and attached it with carriage bolts.’
Western red cedar has no resins or resins, so it can withstand a variety of finishes. The seat can be adjusted to a natural position for low maintenance.
“I think raw western red cedar is beautiful, so I apply a clear coat to preserve its beautiful color,” says Wilkerson. “In case you didn’t know, Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant, so it’s a good material if you plan to place the bench in nature.”

Rocking chairs are definitely the hardest pieces of furniture I make to wear, so I make them to last for generations (I hate spending all that time and effort on something that won’t last!). Here are some photos of the process.
The first step is usually to laminate the rockers. They need to be very strong to withstand the stress of the swing, so I laminated several pieces of wood to this cutter and let the glue dry overnight. It forms a shape and the laminate gives it great strength and makes it look slimmer. I could have used solid wood, but to achieve the same strength, they would have to be very large, which would ruin the look of the rocking chair. For a comfortable swing, it’s important to have the right curve of the form. This is where my strong math background came in handy!
Plan them to the correct thickness, attach small pieces to this profile to create the leg joints, then round everything to create the final profile.

Like the dining room chair, the back straps match the seat and headrest. Tight fit is very important here. These panels have a similar cap to the swing arms, but I usually cut them from solid wood panels, so I vary the thickness along the curve.
The headrests and armrests are the hardest parts to carve and they need to be perfect because it’s the first place your hands will touch! The grain runs in the same direction on the footrest and headrest, creating a very strong adhesive bond. But for added strength, #14 steel screws are used for assembly (they are hidden under wooden plugs, barely visible in the finished rocker chair).
Assemble all parts before final assembly. After the seat is built, the final shaping and sanding is done (the most difficult process!!).
