Let’s face it, dining room chairs are expensive! Also, it’s getting harder and harder to find high-quality, sturdy chairs without spending a lot of money.

My sister has been decorating her dining room for a long time. While the chair frames are in pretty good shape, the microfiber seat cushions are stained, watertight, and impossible to clean.

To begin, you need to measure your chair and record the measurements. For comparison, you can also see the photos below to see how I measured my chair. Here are the measuring points and other things to consider:

For sizes that differ from these, you can adjust the printable chair cover pattern. For example, if your chair back height is only 20 inches, reduce the height of the pattern piece by 3 inches using a pencil and ruler. Cut and trim the pattern just like you sew from a dress pattern that is too long.

Next, create the pattern for the edge of the chair cover. It is a long rectangular piece that wraps around the chair and is sewn into the seat and back slide.

Print the cover pattern on 8.5×11 sheets without adjusting the scale. Line up the edges of the papers to form the entire pattern and glue them together. Cut around each pattern to cut into the fabric. The cover has three models: the back of the chair, the seat and the skirt.

Lay the piece of fabric on a flat surface and place the individual pattern pieces on top of the fabric, lining up the grain lines.

Pin the pattern to your piece of fabric (or use paper weights), and cut with scissors along solid lines. As mentioned above, recommend using leftover fabric to make a sample before using the actual fabric.

With right sides together, fold the back piece in half at the top edge. With the edges lined up, sew the raw edges from top to bottom with a ½” seam.

To create the depth to fit the back support, form a triangle shape as shown on the top edges and sew across the width to make a 1 inch long seam line.

Turn the sewn piece inside out and lay it over the back of the chair to see how it fits.

If everything looks good, go ahead, but if it seems too big, too small, or too short, adjust the hat pattern and do it again.

Then sew the seat to the front of the back of the chair with right sides together ½ inch apart. Be sure to center the seat piece (and match the dots).

Measuring Guide For Slipcovers

Place the cover over the chair to test the fit again before proceeding with the edge stitching. If the fit looks good, continue sewing, but if the seat is too big, too small, or maybe looks bad, adjust the pattern and redo the pattern to test the fit again.

Fold the bottom edge up ½” and press with an iron and then fold the bottom ½” and press as well. Then fold and press the short edges of the long rectangle ½”. Fold back and press, then sew the edge with a ½” seam. Also baste the bottom hem with a ½” hem along the entire length of the bottom.

Line up the stitches with the right sides of the skirt piece and the seat piece together and pin the pieces together if necessary.

How To Make Dining Chair Covers (free Pattern!)

Start sewing the pieces together at the front of the CF (center front) with a ½” seam and go to the CB (center back). Be careful to turn all the corners. Pin the hem a little to help with all the pivot points. The fabric forms a 90 degree angle and at the corners avoid folds or creases in the fabric.

Repeat on the other unstitched side, starting at CF and ending at CB. The back of the skirt will overlap.
