I built this dining table from white oak planks I got from my friend Matt at Rustic River Creations. Matt makes custom tables and furniture and has a great shop in South Nashville. He tied me to dessert boards, but they needed polishing.

Even though we chose some straight boards, we were still dealing with rough wood, and these dampers were 9 feet long and 1-½ inches thick. So Matt, being the guy on his feet, kindly offered to help me turn the boards to get a flat face and a straight edge.

We cut the boards to approximate length and then went through a 16-sided shape with a fun mix of faces and corners. Because of this the boards are flat on one side and one corner.

I honestly don’t think I could handle this size of wood in my current shop. So, if you don’t have a friend like Matt, you can find a lumber yard that sells both hardwood and lumber. What we ended up with is called S1S1E, which means surface with 1 side and 1 edge. This allows me to finish my shop to my exact size.

When I got the boards back to my shop, I gave them a week to acclimate. Then I cut each board to its final width. I decided how wide to make them based on the overall width I wanted for a table top of 40 inches.

Next, I laid out all the boards I was going to use for the table top and glued them together. It shows me the spaces between the boards. I then marked these points with a pencil, folded the boards like a book, and ran them through my friend. This will eliminate any holes caused by the slightly out-of-shape of your dividers.

I closed each of the perforated joinery boards and went through the joints until everything fit snugly. After that I put the wood back up and put a big V in the boards to leave a mark. Next I went and marked the joints about 20 inches apart between the cookies to use to attach them while gluing.

I cut slots for all the cookie boards and then did a final dry fit to make sure everything was good before gluing them together. The last thing you want here is to deal with the problem of drying a glue knot for 3 minutes while you panic…trust me, I’ve been there.

After all the preparatory work is done and the reinforcement is dry, gluing the surface should go smoothly because you know how all the boards fit together. I put the cookies together one board at a time by placing them on the register and gluing them onto the boards I’ve already made.

The next day I went back and removed one of the hub holes in the table top and sanded it rough with 80 grit in a few spots. I marked all the areas that needed filling with blue tape and then added some epoxy.

I used Total Boat Epoxy to fill the holes and instead of leaving it clear I added some black paint. I think black should be bold, but not too soft.
