First, it is important to consider the size of the chair seat. The size of the seat not only determines how much fabric you need, but also the pattern you want to see in the fabric and how to make the seat. Also consider the type of fabric you want. Machine washable materials are ideal, especially if you have children. Cloth, chintz, canvas, denim and other medium or heavy weight fabrics are good choices for home decor. Also consider what color and/or pattern you want in your fabric. When shopping for fabric, consider whether you want your chair covers to blend in with the rest of your kitchen, or whether you want them to pop.

Marble Look Dining Table And Nailhead Chairs
Hello everyone. As I said earlier this week, I’m sharing how I made Parsons chairs for our DIY farmhouse table. I wanted to save money on chairs, but I couldn’t find a fabric that we liked that would match our table or something that didn’t have arms and legs. These chairs cost $40 each. The biggest expense was the fabric. Home decor fabric isn’t cheap, but I found this on sale at Hobby Lobby. I wanted something that would complement the home decor and not show dirty finger stains. I got this chair plan again from the wonderful Anna White. Her plans are great, but I’ve made some changes to fit our needs/wants. Based on another bragging post, I used 2x3s for the chair seats and back legs. I increased the height of the back of the chair by 22 inches and changed the seat angle from 15 degrees to 5 degrees. Since we have formal chairs on our casual dining table, I want them to sit a little straighter 🙂
The first step is to assemble the seat. I used a Craig Jigto drill on the chair pieces. I screwed the sides of the seat together using 2 1/2 inch pocket screws. That was the hardest part. Stabilizing the back was a bit tricky to put together.
Once the side and back pieces are attached, you can once again secure the bottom and rear seat supports with 2 1/2 inch pocket screws.

Next, you start making the legs. When assembling the legs, make sure your pockets face the correct direction to attach the holes to the seat. I have come close to this error many times 🙂
I used 1/2″ plywood for the back and bottom of the seats. You can also use jute fabric for seat cushions (found at thrift stores and fabric stores). After sitting here for a few months, my husband thinks we should go with jute to give the seat a bit of bounce (is it?) I’d replace the plywood backing with mesh if possible. One day… after I assembled all the chairs, I finished the base with Minwax Provencal Stain and Minwax Polyacrylic. It is not necessary to finish the seat, as it will be covered with fabric.
I used a spray gun to attach a 1/2 inch foam stick to the back of the chair. Be careful not to punch the back of the chair too hard.

I cut off the excess with scissors so it would match the back sides. I then sprayed the seat with adhesive and added a foam pad.
Then came the part I dreaded the most. I am not a sewist. I wouldn’t say I hate it, but I don’t do it because I want to either. If I dusted my grandmother, she would grunt.
Since I made four chairs, I made a pattern out of freezer paper so I could use it again and again. Note that if you want to modify the chair to fit a 17×15” seat cushion and/or chair back height, you will need to make the same changes to the fabric pattern. I’m not a seamstress so I can’t explain how to sew this. I’ll let this guy do the artutorial. He describes it better than I can.

Here’s what my chair looked like when I was done. The hardest part of sewing is making sure all my lines match up. I accidentally made a mistake and sat with a seam ripper for a while to correct the mistake. If you want to make it more slippery you can easily sew the bottom hem. Whatever your taste 🙂 Make sure you still whip to finish the side seam.
I used lots of staples to secure the fabric to the bottom of the seat and then cut off the excess fabric.
Use a whip stitch to sew an invisible seam along the sides to complete the seam connecting the seat bottom to the back.

After all the sewing is done, use 2 1/2-inch pocket screws to secure the chair base to the seat. Before we even let the kids touch one of them, we sprayed them with Scotch Guard to protect them from drips and fumes.
I was very happy with how it turned out. I love that we can paint them to match our table and save a ton of money.
Here they are on our table. They are very sturdy chairs and we still have a stain! Of course this is because I bench my kids 😉
