As I was looking around my house the other day, I realized that the only calendar in our house has been dry for the past three months and is only showing up for cute pictures of our kids. From a technical point of view, our phones seem to be used for almost everything: calendars, clocks, smart phones….

But, I realized that sometimes we need to know the day without the distraction of being on our phones all the time: Facebook, Instagram, email, texts you haven’t answered in a day, etc. good to have a calendar in view. So I started to create a simple desk calendar that can serve many functions both as a calendar and as a photo, I am happy to show you how to make it yourself today!

Start by cutting the wood to size. I took a small pine tree, which I found in our carved tree. You will need 7.25″W x 2.25″H for the base and 7.25″W x 4.5″H for the top.

Now, take your wood glue and place it on the bottom edge of your large tree and place it in the middle.
Then, take two long wooden screws and lock the board together. These fasteners hold everything together until the glue dries.
After the glue has dried, grab the wood filler and fill all the cracks and where the boards are joined. You can fill with a putty knife or your fingers. Needless to say, my long fingers are the perfect tool for this type of work, and I hardly ever use a clay knife anymore.

Read the label on the wood filler, but it’s best to wait at least a few hours for it to dry. For deep cracks, wait at least one night to fill.
When the wood mask is completely warm, sand the work with 120 grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood.
Work on scraping to remove sand residue and be sure to remove all sand residue from the work surface. Then wipe your work with a damp cloth

Grab your gloves, gloves, and a clean towel. Be sure to mix your dirt before placing the towel into the stain. If you are working quickly, use a towel to wipe the stain across your work along the grain. After 10-15 minutes, depending on how complete your job is, wipe off the remaining stain with a clean towel.
Then it’s time to put it together. To give this project a modern industrial feel, take three small soapy nails and spray them black.

Create a simple calendar in any word processor, excel or even canva.com. All you need is a 4.25 inch clock by 3.375 inches of your cut calendar. This makes an instax photo twice as long as it is wide.
Before printing, measure 5/16 inch and add a small circle so you don’t know where to put your hole when you cut the hole in your calendar. When printing and cutting out the calendar, punch two holes in your calendar with a small hole punch.
Next, take your instax photo and prop it up on top of the calendar, making sure the lens is straight. Remove the lens from your Instax and it’s almost done.

Once the paint is dry on your nails, flip them over on your desk and hang the pictures on your calendar.
