Chaise lounges may seem like a daunting project, but if you plan properly, they are no more difficult to build than a chair or sofa – there is just more measuring and cutting involved. These DIY designs for a single sofa will guide you step by step on how to make your own armchair.
Since these chairs will be used outside, I recommend using a good weather resistant wood like cedar (or teak if you want really tall). Although the use of pine is still good as long as you paint or seal it properly.
The first step is to build a simple box to act as the outer frame of your living room. Use wood glue and both pocket screws on the inside or finish with nails/screws on the outside.

After assembling the outer frame it is time to assemble the inner frame which will be the support for the lower seat slats and the support for the rear high slat. All of these pieces are offset from the top of the outer frame by 3/4″ (the thickness of the feathers) so that the slats sit flush with the outer frame.

I prefer to install the inner frame pieces first to make sure they fit well inside the outer frame, but then assemble the inner frame separately before attaching it to the outer frame. This method allows you to screw the 26″ boards from the outside to the 44 1/2″ boards instead of using pocket screws or trying to fasten them together.
This step is very simple. Starting 1/4″ from the baseboard of the outer frame, attach the 1×3 slats to the inner frame. You don’t need to use wood glue here as gravity should hold them in place – especially if you attach them to each of the four support plates with nails or screws.

Now that you’ve assembled the fixed parts, it’s time to move on to the moving parts. Start by cutting the four pieces of 1×4 to 34 1/2″, then cut a 3 1/2″ radius bow on one end to turn the back in and out of the frame.
Now you will attach the thirteen 1×3″ rods to the back support. You start at the lowest rod, making sure that the edge goes up with the bottom edge of the back of the chair. NOTE: this first rod needs you to move around the bottom edge around the back freely. Continue attaching the remaining twelve slats using screws or nails in the same manner as the bottom slats, leaving a 1/4″ gap between them.
After attaching the slats, it’s time to attach two 1x4x2″ spacers to the outside of the outer seats of the seat back. These should be offset about 1/4″ from the bottom edge of the back support.

The last thing you want to do when building this part is drill the holes for the carriage bolts 3/8″ on each side and 1/3″ down from the bottom of the slats. It is in these holes that the backup screw rotates, so it is important that they are positioned correctly.
The other two holes are for the support arm bearing bolts. These should be placed 15 3/4″ from the edge closest to the support blocks and 1 3/4″ from the edge of the table.
Now that you have built the back of the seat, it is time to assemble and attach the support arm that will allow you to adjust the angle of the rest of the back. This requires you to drill one hole in each end of the 1 x 2 x 19 1/2″ board. At one end you drill a 3/4″ diameter hole for the dowel. This hole should be located 3/4″ from each edge of the board. The hole at the other end of the board for the stretcher is 3/8″ and should also be located 3/4″ from each end.

Once the holes are drilled, use the 2″ carriage bolts to attach the brackets to the inside of the outer back support boards and drive the 3/4″ dowel with an even coverage over each end.
Attach the back by placing it in the inner frame. Mark where the 3/8″ carriage bolt holes go up to the outer frame, drill those holes and use the 3″ carriage bolts to secure.
Place the 24″ 1×2 board under the top inner frame board so it sits 2 1/4″ below the top edge of the outer frame. Then attach a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3/4″ block every 1 1/2″, starting 1 1/2″ from the top inner frameboard, as shown in the image below. A good tip to make sure both sides stay the same is to use another 26″ length of 1×2 as a spacer that goes between the two 24″ boards.
