How To Make A Concrete Coffee Table – Another DIY project in the books! Well, you won’t lie, it took a lot of time and effort, but it was 100% worth it. When Jacob and I were looking for coffee tables for our living room, we knew we needed a solid look, similar to Restoration Hardware coffee tables. But we also knew we didn’t want to spend a million dollars lol. We started to see if we could do it ourselves and found some helpful YouTube videos that inspired us to try it ourselves, with some modifications of our own.
Although this project took some time and waiting, we are VERY HAPPY with how it turned out and love the rugged and angular design it brings to our living room. So how did we do it? Let’s dive into it!
How To Make A Concrete Coffee Table
We wanted a 4×4 foot side table, so Jacob built a 2×4 lumber frame. He built 4 sides of the rectangle and then connected them together to form a frame.

After the frame was built, we added a 4×4 plywood top and nailed it on all sides. Then, using more plywood, Jacob measured and cut the sides of the table (using a table saw) and tapped each side with a nail.
The next step was to cover the entire table with wire mesh. This step is SUPER important. If you skip this step, the cement will have nothing to hold onto and will fall off the wood when it dries. We have wire mesh in our tractor shop. We also hammered the staples so they don’t stick.
Note: We ended up moving the table to the living room, where it stayed. We knew that after we started pouring concrete, the table would be very heavy. I’m so glad we decided to do this because the table ended up weighing at least 200 pounds lol.

The cement you will want to use is QuikWall Surface Bonding Cement. You’ll find all kinds in the store, but this is the one you’ll want to use specifically for this project. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find it in the gray we wanted, so we ended up using Quikrete Liquid Cement Color to get the gray we wanted. We came up with a small, specific recipe, and that’s how we made each batch throughout the project.
We mixed 1 cap of paint with 6 cups of water and then mixed with 18 cups of cement. We knew we didn’t want to use too many colors because we didn’t want the table to be too dark. If you want your table to be dark grey, you will simply mix more colors. But make sure you have the specific recipe you will be using for each batch so that the color matches the chart (since you will be doing this in batches).
After mixing the water color mixture with concrete, we mixed it with an electric drill and a concrete mixer attachment. This made mixing easier. If you do it by hand it will be more difficult and you probably won’t get a homogeneous mixture.

Immediately after thorough mixing, pour the mixture onto the edge of the table and smooth the concrete with a real grinder.
After leveling it to your liking, let it dry for 2 FULL DAYS. This is very important as you want to make sure the concrete is dry and hard enough that it won’t crack when you turn the table over to make the other side.
After 2 days, turn the table over to the other side (we used a cart to help us turn over which helped a lot) and repeat this process on the next side! Do this until all 4 sides of the table are filled.
Concrete Coffee Tables You Can Buy Or Build Yourself
When you are ready to make the countertop you need to be safe and work quickly as the countertop is quite large and you will need 3 batches of your concrete. Jacob and I did it this way: I smoothed the first batch, and while I was doing that, he worked on blending the second batch. As soon as the third batch was poured, he came to help me grease everything.
Once the entire table has been concreted, we recommend letting it sit for at least 3 FULL WEEKS to ensure it is 100% cured.
After 3 weeks you are ready to seal it! I used the Olympic Waterguard Sealer and simply brushed over the entire surface of the table and blinds. It was so easy to apply! This will protect your table from water or other liquids that may be spilled on it.
