How To Build A Pallet Table
For our latest pallet project, we show you how to build a rustic pallet table/drink storage platform for your garden or plot. As you can see from the accompanying photos, the palette we received was pretty bad even by our standards. The resulting pallet table could be described as ‘a little rough around the edges’ and its design would not soon be mistaken for Chippendale*, but neither a loud sanding nor a spot of paint could fix it. . As always, be sure to wear a proper pair of gloves to prevent breakage, and watch out for protruding nails when taking pallets apart.

Step 2: Take the largest half and cut out the center section by cutting at the points shown
Step 4: Cut two 500mm x 140mm boards and attach them to the leg pieces you made as shown in this section.

Start by resizing your palette to your desired size. Then cut to size (or leave it if your pallet is the right size for your coffee table’s specs!).

Remove and replace the board if necessary. All pallets have different characteristics (and often with parts reused from previous pallets) so they can be boards close to each other or adjacent to each other. Then, if the slats are spaced apart, you can take the extra pieces cut and place them on top of the open board as above. Loosen the hinges with a hammer and use a pry bar to remove excess nails if necessary. Be careful with this step though, because if the wood is too dry, the pallet board may break when you tap it. Be careful to remove links in one piece!
Use a few extra boards (or cut a few pieces of wood if necessary) to reinforce the bottom of the pallet. Make sure there are two pieces that go from the bottom of the pallet to either end so there is enough room for the hairpin legs.
Attach the hairpin legs to the bottom of the pallet by screwing one into each corner. Also, you may need to pre-drill the holes before drilling the screws.

Finally, cover the table with a varnish or two. Apply evenly and allow to dry for a few hours before ingesting. It is not necessary to smooth rough areas before varnishing. Here we have left the edges rough for an industrial look.
Once the varnish is dry, your new coffee table is ready to go to its new home. Add some books and centerpieces for display!
