Building a direct edge epoxy river coffee table sounds really easy, doesn’t it? Take a piece of live maple wood, cut it in half, make a mold, pour resin, remove the mold…easy. Well, that’s not how it turned out for me. If you’re thinking of making your own epoxy resin river table, you might learn a thing or two from my mistakes.

X5′ Walnut Slab & Blue Epoxy Resin River Table
The basic steps to building a straight river table seem simple enough, but it’s not a cheap project, so you don’t want to mess it up. Do your research. I didn’t do enough research beforehand. In general, I enjoy being involved in a project and learning from mistakes. In retrospect, here are some tutorials I should have read earlier:
I started this river table with straight maple cherry wood that I bought from The Wood Source in Ottawa. It was about four meters long and 18 meters wide. Tony cut it in half for me on the table saw, then I sanded it and removed the bark from the straight edge.
Then I created the forms. I used 3/4″ melamine strips for the sides of the forms and 1/4″ melamine for the bottom.

I assumed that the bottom 1/4 inch of melamine was smooth and that the coffee table would come off after the resin cured. Don’t do that!
The 1/4″ mdf did not come out in one piece. No, it was more than a thousand pieces. And after a few hours of carving and using a belt sander to remove the rest. Save time and use thicker melamine for forms.
After preparing the cherry wood and building the shape, it was time to pour the resin. First, I mixed a small amount of two-part epoxy resin and coated the bottom of the form. That way you won’t have bubbles on the underside of the table. I then carefully placed the two pieces of live maple wood into the shapes and nailed them into shape.
