How To Make A Epoxy Table

You can extend the drying time by playing with the room temperature to get a thicker flow and you can do the opposite for thin layers with sanding between each layer. In general, the drying time is 8 to 12 hours for a thin layer and 3 to 7 days for the best cure, depending on the thickness or the product chosen. During this time you can, for example, build the legs of your table!

Bob Clagett shared a how-to video on his website for this project, inspired by his wife’s love of river and sea tables. This project takes about a week to complete when you factor in setting time and drying time, and Bob took all three to get it right. He shares his top tips for concrete and epoxy processes in his videos, and the steps are outlined here.
Cut the melamine to get the concrete shape. You will need four pieces for the sides that will determine the length and width of the bottom piece and the height of the size you want to make your table. Be sure to keep these two pieces slightly larger than the others for a secure shape.

Tie the side pieces together and secure the melamine bottom piece with screws. Next, cut small pieces of melamine to mimic the shape of your inserted table legs. Cut a piece the width of the thigh and cut a small piece to make up the difference in width on the other side. Glue the two pieces together with CA glue and then put them in place.
Finally, the mold is sealed with silicone sealant at each seam. Also seal the cut edges with melamine to prevent the concrete from sticking. Apply form release to make it easier to remove corner and side pieces from concrete and epoxy.
When the sealant dries, clean the mold. Then follow the directions to add water to your concrete mix and prepare it in a large bucket. (See Roger Cook and Kevin O’Connor for some tips on how to work with concrete.)

Raise one side of your form a few inches (Bob used a melamine scrap) so you can pour the concrete at an angle. This means that the effect of the seas is seen in increasing depth.
Pour slowly, then take your time to make the concrete look like a beach once it’s in the mold. Bob made his base thinner on one side and thicker on the other, then added texture on top to give the concrete seabed a more natural look.
Remove any air bubbles by running an orbital sander (without pads) around the edges of the mold. Cover with plastic and let cure for about 48 hours.

Adjust the rod on your table so you cut four square feet for your table. These measurements should match the size of the inserts you made in your concrete form. Clean and sand the legs properly and choose the side of each leg that you want facing the outside of the table.
Bob used lumber from the same area to cut four pieces for the cross bracing. He cut it to length, but slightly larger.
After the concrete has dried and hardened for a few days, vacuum excess concrete and dust from the sides of the mold. Then place the form for the epoxy by lifting it in the opposite direction while pouring the concrete.
Deep Pour Resin For Diy Epoxy River Tables
Then follow the specific proportions and procedures for making epoxy resin. Add blue resin dye to give the epoxy a marine color (Bob added 10 drops). Pour the first batch of epoxy by manually adjusting the mold so that it covers the entire bottom and reaches the corners.
Apply lightly with a heat gun which will begin to form air bubbles. Continue adding epoxy until the table reaches the correct height, waiting 4-6 hours between each post. Bob used 2 gallons of epoxy, divided into 4 separate batches. After the final coat is added and the heat gun is used to remove air bubbles, allow the epoxy to cure for 48 hours.
Avoid cracking by keeping the thickness below the recommended maximum for each pool. If a crack forms, you can fix it by carefully pouring epoxy into the crack after letting it sit for 4-6 hours, then applying a heat gun to the area before pouring the rest of the epoxy into the mold.

Open the mold one panel at a time, using a hammer to knock the melamine pieces out of the dry concrete and epoxy. Then use an orbital sander to remove the residue. Be sure to sand the edges of the table, which may be sharp after the epoxy cures.
Mold release should help remove the side pieces and corners, but if they stick, use a hammer and chisel to remove the pieces. Save any corner of the epoxy that is broken and use CA glue to reattach it after the initial sanding of the table is complete.
Go back to the cross brace pieces that were made before you added the epoxy and cut to the final width and length. One pair crosses under the table, and the other near the edge of the table leg.
