Now that Wilder is in school two days a week, I can work a lot more than I have since we moved here. When we decorated this living room, we added a desk for me to work on, which was great, but as I got more work, my needs grew. I used to cram contracts into two narrow desks and they were a mess. My Cricut machine was a new addition over the holidays and I have nowhere to store it. Something needed to be done to create a dedicated home office area…I was in desperate need of storage! Today I want to show you how I got more storage and space in my small desk and other improvements in that space. We haven’t really touched this room other than putting in some furniture and it’s time for it to be a little more special, a little more exclusive and a lot of work. How To Paint An Old Office Desk To Make It Look New ⋆ The Stuff Of Success
As you can see, I have recently added some necessary spaces to give me plenty of storage and create a home office area. Before then, we had a large mirror behind the computer. I really wanted a mirror in there, and I loved the light it cast in this dark west-facing room, but it didn’t meet my needs. Here’s the same room from last summer with a cool Bassett mirror. This is a beautiful modern mirror and I wish I could find a place for it. When I ordered the original working with Bassett it was new and they didn’t have any volume so I was hoping it would work in my post but it turned out to be too big. While nice, the mirror doesn’t meet my size needs at all, and it’s not a practical use of space. I need a real, if small, home office.
Apparently what I really need is to use my vertical space wisely and add storage (with plants!). I don’t want anything dull or boring and I don’t want songs like we use in Sawyer’s room because I want them a little bit bigger. After all, this corner is near the entrance of our house and people see it often. It’s so bad that I have to try to keep my desk free of distractions. 😉
DIY Cartel contacted me to see if I would be interested in trying out some of their kits just as I was dreaming up this project and I jumped at the chance. I prefer this style that can be worn with the back support up or down, but they offer many styles. I also love the look of the sturdy metal cabinets I made, but I wanted some warmth in this corner. I can use them later when I get to bathe Sawyer again one day. Anyway, let’s dive into this project!

Plans: I measured the height from the top of the computer screen to the ceiling to figure out how much room I could have with the bottom two 12 inches high so I could have journal files for my district meeting. I would love to have these magazines. file boxes and each is 11 3/4 inches tall. Anyway, based on my measurements I could fit 3 shelves on my table top. Since the table is 42 inches wide, I also knew I wanted the shelves to be the same width to maximize space and appeal to the eye. With a 42 inch panel, two panels per shelf enough, so I ordered 6. By the way, I could have bought the panels and cut them myself, but I wanted the free wood cutting service that Home Depot offers you. Because I only use them for savings and I don’t build anything that requires perfection, this is a great opportunity to bring this service to life and save myself the trouble.
Installation: To make these shelves as strong as possible, it is better to nail the two brackets. With our gap, that’s not possible, so I want to make sure that at least one side is secure in the stud. Once I found the studs (it’s on the right side of the shelves and all the right sides are attached to the studs) I started by installing the first piece on the right side, measuring from the table top to give me about 6 inches over. the studs. computer check. I don’t want to have a shelf on top of it and write on top of it because it doesn’t look good on the computer and might block my view of the screen. I made sure my stone was correct, I made a pencil mark for the stone holes on the wall and drilled lead holes on those pencil marks. When I was sure it was wrong, I re-marked the places I dug. Here I was drilling into the plaster wall, so I followed the rules on my heavy equipment. I’m not going to lie… I had some rough times, I dropped F-bombs (Wilder was with Chris), but I finally figured it out and nailed the rock.

Once the two sides were up, I placed my wood on the stand, tested it to make sure it was level, and secured the shelf in place using 1/2 inch screws. Here you can see the 2″ screws in place on the wall and the 1/2″ screws in place under the shelf.
With the first shelf, I measured 12 inches from the top of the shelf to figure out where the top of the next set would go. Once I got that length, I repeated the process of attaching the right side to the wood, then the left to the drywall, then attaching the second sheet. Finally, I repeated this process one last time for the last shelf.
Now that the shelves are mounted on the wall, there is still a lot to do! As you can see, the shelves are currently in raw wood condition, but I would like to paint them the same color as the walls. I really like the look that Emma of A Beautiful Mess got for her home office, which has a nice look with shelves in the same color. Our living room was of course originally white when we moved in at the moment. I have holes to fill all over the walls and I need to get hold of the color. This room has double glazing which is nice, but it gets some light due to the west front of the house.

Yesterday I hit my local Sherwin Williams with a few colors in mind and brought home about 4,392 products, give or take. These are 6 of my favorites. In addition to choosing a color for this space, I have new shoes on the way and I’ll share them later this month. (Unfortunately, these were destroyed by my dogs and I had to reprogram them to make them work.) Additionally, we took advantage of the TV sales during Super Bowl weekend and got a bigger smart TV to go with it. We used to have an old smart TV. There are times when Wilder wakes up from his nap and I have 20 minutes of work left where I can just use Netflix.
